Vict0ar, you had a solid position early but it seems that you started losing the thread on move 11. I would’ve castled right away and/or tried to put the bishop on b7 to avoid the trick that made you lose that rook.
I’ll try to start playing tomorrow. If you see me online, go ahead and challenge me.
I play an offbeat line vs the Sicilian and unfortunately for LouisCyphre he wandered right into the landmine in the middle of it, this line is not fun to walk into. Have a look at the game if you want to avoid the same thing happening to you. The move to avoid is 6 … d5, although 8 … Qa5 would kind of save the day.
Here I played d6. Now Black’s bishop is under attack and you can’t take the queen, or in fact do anything that doesn’t deal with the other threat, which is Bc4+ mating.
Ouch! I missed that. But actually this isn’t a problem for White, what’s the best move here?
Best is Bc6. Now with the queen shielded, the threat on the rook is renewed and if the rook moves, there will be Be8+ with a discovery on the queen. I instead played Qa5 with the same idea, but this allows the cool resource Rd7, blocking the discovery and you can’t take the rook because the bishop is pinned to the queen. (In the game Louis missed the discovery and resigned after I won the queen).
I won a very close one against @joltinjake that came down to a time scramble. I never felt comfortable in the game and felt that it was going downhill till the end.
This position would have been winning for black but we both missed it with little time left on our clocks:
lol I know, I was never that great, but this format makes me feel like I don’t even know how to play the game. I can’t find moves in 5-10 seconds, it takes me like a minute or two
It’s the opposite for me, at 3 - 0 guy spends an extra 5 seconds here or an extra 5 seconds there it’s done. Even in Rapid with some deep thinks, there’s still a limited amount of time you can burn, but 3 seconds is a healthy increment to hold winning positions at a certain level. Translation, wah wah, I have to actually achieve winning positions at 5 3 instead of being aggressive (ie often inaccurate) and faster, so I’m a sad camper atm.
Rh3 was a very bad move, I just overlooked entirely that I was placing the rook on the line of the bishop. Although my accuracy is a lot lower all the rest of my mistakes were after I blundered. Interesting game up until that point where chess.com’s analysis flags no inaccuracies for either player.
GG, Chris. Really close until the blunder. I’m surprised at my accuracy TBH, I guess I was trying really hard not to make mistakes.
I completely missed the possibility of 17. Bd5, so I’m lucky that my rook had the b8 square to escape and that my queen was controlling the dark squares.
Hey guys, apologies for being remiss and not playing any games yet. I should be able to play a bunch at the weekend, I’ll drop a post tomorrow to see who’s around. I’ll try to figure out how to use this discord thing as well, time to catch up with with what the kids are doing these days I suppose!
Howdy all. 9am on Saturday morning here and we’re up bright and early and ready for battle. Reply to play, I’ll be keeping an eye on my notifications. I’m free to play pretty much for the next 10 hours.
I put my rating down as 1800 on the sheet but I think that’s way too high. It’s only that on lichess after playing a bunch of games with jal on a brand new account (and I lost more than I won!) My rating on chess.com varies between 1350 and 1450 for blitz, about 1500-1600 for rapid.
The entire reason I didn’t participate is that I thought I would end up being one of those people. And not even that bad. I figured I’d only be good for a couple of games a week.
