Ukraine, Russia, and the West

For anyone interesting in the aviation nerd perspective on the conflict:

Could be a big series of dominoes, resulting in major reroutings/cancellations to Asia, stranded Russians across the world, Russian airlines unable to repair their planes, and disruption to cargo carriers.

According to Wikipedia, the SU-27 is around a decade older than the SU-30.

Message from a military commander in charge, looks like town of Konotop, around Sumy, is surrounded by russian forces. reports that civilians can go through the south checkpoint. otherwise, an assault is on it is happening on the other side.

More social media discussing that day 2 is probably going to bring a greater assault than day 1.

it comes back to me intermittently on the phone, but not in browser.

saw some tweets that defense ministry website was also taken down by anonymous, but i didn’t click on it myself.

lol - that made dlk9s jr’s night. He loves TF2, is a semi-spy main, and was just 3D-printing a Heavy the other day (it failed, we think the print bed isn’t level).

I talked to this Ukrainian lady for a few minutes today. She was there with friends but they were up closer to the Capitol building I think. She only started to learn English when she got here with her husband a couple of years ago but she speaks it surprisingly well. Said she hadn’t been able to sleep last night after getting a ton of messages from family and friends. I couldn’t think of anything particularly comforting to say so I offered to bring her some snacks but she said nah. (I blurred her face in the pic. She didn’t mind that I took her picture and she said she’d given a TV interview earlier.) Anyone know what the symbol on the sign is? I didn’t think to ask.

I saw on TV that a couple dozen more people showed up to protest after this. Not a lot but more than I expected here. It definitely makes a difference to talk to people being affected.

i used to read this blog 3-4 years ago, because the takes on military were mildly interesting. decided to check it again today. to my surprise it’s full of twitter links for separatists claiming they were bombed by ukraine. and another gem that’s only hours old, but already has already not aged well.

In Mariupol, an amphibious assault is also reported to have taken place and the city is reported to have fallen in less than three hours.

Putin has urged Ukrainian service members to “Lay down their arms and go home,” adding that “The goal is the demilitarisation of #Ukraine and the punishment of Nazi’s and criminals.”

I have seen that crown symbol on a few Ukrainian flags, not sure what the meaning is.
