Ukraine, Russia, and the West

I don’t have a ton of knowledge of nuclear power, but I have read one book on its history and my wife is a mechanical engineer in the nuclear industry. I highly doubt that there is much radiation to release. The spent nuclear waste/fuel and reactor core is the only part of normal reactor you would have to worry about long term and while the meltdown allowed some of that bad radiation to escape I doubt there’s much more that could be released via a few bombs or missiles or artillery.

It’s also 20 miles from Romania.

What materials at Chernobyl could would-be Ukrainian insurgents have weaponized and used against an occupying Russian force and were they able to remove any of that before the invasion?

I’m guessing they’re just passing through Chernobyl on their way to Kiev. Surely the Russians have plenty of refined nuclear material back home.

I dunno. The hostage taking is concerning, along with this.

I honestly have no clue.

I didn’t know @boredsocial worked in Chernobyl.

I suppose they could turn it into a giant dirty bomb if they really wanted to, but I’m pretty sure that’s considered Not Cool by the international rules of warfare.

wouldn’t surprise me if Russia’s nukes were all wearing out and they just took it because they needed it to make new ones

The enriched uranium is the one thing that isn’t going to wear out! I’m not sure if reactor-grade stuff is refined enough for nuclear weapons anyway.

Or it’s a place to set up camp and probably not have to worry about anyone raining bombs on your head.

There is enough radioactivity left at Chernobyl to spend a couple billion to replace the sarcophagus about 5 years ago. Chernobyl was producing electricity until maybe 15 years ago, though not now.

The interesting thing about the attack in that sector, which includes the Hostomel airbase NW of Kyiv, is it removes any doubt that Putin will be satisfied with part of Ukraine. The troops in that sector are in a vulnerable spot between a reservoir with no bridges to the east and defending forces to the west.
