Some real “Jesus clearing the money changers out of the temple with a whip” vibes.

almost all colored territory outside of cities and major towns and roads is empty space and fields. especially in the south.

i do believe that UA is on the offensive where they can be, and russia hasn’t been able to advance further, but the red/yellow color movement is misleading.

You don’t have to have units in every inch of territory you control. If you have the ability to move units to a spot and the enemy can’t, you have control.

I can confirm some of the UA advances on that wiki map like Sumy and Kryvyi Rih, but not toward Mariupol. If the Ukrainians can relieve Mariupol I would buy a ticket to that movie.

Unconfirmed but Peskov assured me there was no possibility of Russia using nukes in this conflict. You just can’t trust anybody these days.

It seems like the Russian people have mostly gotten behind the war.

the proportion of those who supported the war indeed surprised many russians of the opposing views. one told me, [paraphrasing] “i thought once the regime crossed obvious red lines, the support would end. but it turned out those who thought like me are not the majority”.

I don’t know what eschatological means, but it’s a bigger word than oil and gas put together.

Nope.

I get nervous I’ll mess up pulling into the car wash track. No way I could handle that pressure.

What’s the weight trigger on those? Are they antitank and need something like 1000 pounds of pressure direct or will go off on any vehicle?

They’ll go off if you step on them

I appreciate hearing ideas I never would have thought of myself, and I never ever would have thought of this. I like how it simultaneously avoids starry-eyed “all people must be free” romanticism, and hard-headed “the strong do what they will, the weak suffer what they must” realpolitik, in favor of the vibe of some guy from a private equity firm trying to cut operating expenses: “Did anyone here notice that we have 195 countries, some duplicating each other’s portfolios? Do we really need both a Netherlands and a Belgium? And why do we still have an Egypt? People haven’t wanted Egypts for two thousand years!”

I love this dude’s takes sometimes.

Realistically “people” (like “obscenity” and everything else) are a kind of know-it-when-you-see-it combination of all these factors. I hate this. It means any would-be conqueror can say “come on, this place I want to conquer isn’t a real ‘people’” - and then you need to litigate annoying questions about exactly how glorious a history they had, and which version of Civilization they appeared in, in order to prove him wrong.
