Ukraine, Russia, and the West

that’s like the curse of RM

That in-flight missile video could have come from an earlier test of a Russian missile. They have three different hypersonic missiles.

I said in this thread I thought something was weird about that Mariupol theater bombing. I haven’t seen one picture of anyone coming out dead or injured (contrast with hospital bombing). You could just tell by the wording and lack of images that something wasn’t exactly like it was being portrayed.

Turns out the people were in a shelter built under the teater, and as far as I know all are safe. They weren’t just hanging out in the structure above ground.

However, the propaganda effect is still working as that nuance is lost.

CCP is an ex communist authoritarian dictatorship. They will always be allied with Russia.

The only time they lashed out against another dictatorship was when North Korea was lobbing ICBMs all over the place threatening potential nuclear war. That seems to be the red line for them.

More than half Okhtyrka’s population have fled, and reports that it has been razed are hardly fanciful. The train station is gone, pummelled with an explosive ferocity that has flipped over some of the heavy freight wagons. Gone too are the town hall, a shopping centre and a local cultural centre. A single bomb managed to obliterate three houses and destroy the windows and balconies of a pair of nine-storey buildings 100 metres away.

“Two elderly ladies died in these houses today,” said Kuzmenko, pointing to the results of the latest Russian strike. More bodies could lie in the debris.

But why Okhtyrka? Looking around, it’s hard to fathom what could have made this small city such a target, and why at least 100 civilians appear to have been killed.

“It’s because Okhtyrka did not surrender, and did not greet the Russians with flowers,” Kuzmenko said. The mayor said he had spoken to Russian prisoners of war who confessed that they had expected to be in Kyiv within two days.

“I see how the town is dying in front of our eyes, but we’re young, and those who have left will return to rebuild it. Our dear Okhtyrka will stand, and our Ukraine will last. We will welcome spring with joy. We will go to our beaches. We will take a rest in our green meadows and hills. We will enjoy the beauty here.”

My hairstylist’s mom’s city. I’ve been scared to text her to ask how her mom is. But I just did anyway. I don’t know what the protocol is when you’re worried someone’s loved one might be dead.

Ok I got a response:

yes, my parents are there. I was able to talk this morning with them. Please pray that Russian troops will be not able to get the city!

It’s like horror movie…. my parents are strong believers they resist with faith and prayers :heart::innocent:
So far they house stay strong protected by Gods angels :innocent:they have internet :pray:and electricity  but 30 bombs was thrown on the city …,

Jesus.

She also sent me the Guardian article. So she knows how bad things are. I wasn’t going to send the article to her for that reason. I can’t imagine what her parents are going through now. I assume if they could have gotten out they would have.

This is how it should be.

I’m not sure that nuance matters. The fuckers knowingly bombed a building where there were a bunch of kids being sheltered. Are we supposed to give them credit because their explosions didn’t get deep enough?

No it has nothing to do with giving the Russians credit. It has to do with me trying to only pass along confirmed information to this thread.

For instance - the mayor of Mariupol is saying that some citizens have been kidnapped by Russian troops and already distributed to far-flung areas in Russia. None of this has been confirmed. The way the local authorities handled the theater bombing makes me wonder how much of that is real and how much is exaggerated for (admittedly noble) war information messaging. That’s all.

I’m learning over time which sources only pass along confirmed information, and which tend to pass along bombastic unconfirmed information. I think it’s worth knowing the difference. For the most part official Ukraine press releases at the national level have been accurate.

Got it. When you said the “propaganda effect is still working” it sounded a bit like you wished it wasn’t.

I am glad you posted that info. Good news from Ukraine is always nice to hear.
