They don’t demand consistency from themselves. They will find a way to be both Russia hawks and pro-Russia, somehow.
I do not see how Ukraine signs a peace treaty that does not offer a strong guarantee that this aggression will not be repeated. Sonething like special partner status with NATO where Article 5 includes Ukraine, but no other NATO Nations will station troops of weapons systems in Ukraine.
As this does not seem acceptable to Russia, we will have more destruction until one side is devestated enough to want this to end more than caring about and kind of goals they might have.

I am trying not to follow this too closely for my own mental health. One thing I have wondered - are the Russian soldiers so brainwashed that they think they are Denazifying Ukraine and they are fighting a just war? Or do they know it’s all bullshit and they’re just going forward because not following orders is a death sentence?

Grunts have been brainwashed for millenia to throw their bodies for wars they have no idea whats for.
There is a subset of the population that will always follow orders to kill.
Russian moral is very bad right now. They are leaving their dead to rot, abandoning vehicles, not progressing forward so generals have to go to the front line and get 4 generals killed so far. Every box for low combat morale is being checked off.
