Meh, I don’t know if I like the “it’s in the Russian blood since time immemorial” idea. You can point to situations that are the same, but once you start assign motivations because of immutable characteristics you’re into “It’s in the Japanese character to fight to the last man, better nuke them” territory.
I don’t think most people associate power-hungry Russian leaders with ordinary Russian people.

Much like the chatter that said Kyiv was going to be surrounded 3 days ago, I keep seeing chatter that a big all out assault on Kyiv is coming soon. Which seems like it would be massively suicidal and I’m not sure the Russian troops would even obey.
Kyiv supposedly still has most of their air force and has anti-aircraft still intact in Kiev. So indiscriminate bombing runs are out. The Russians still haven’t gotten close enough for artillery attacks on Kyiv proper afaik. So unloading what’s left of their missiles is about the only move they can make. Or a suicidal assault against dug-in very well-prepared defenders.
We’ll see, but it doesn’t make sense to me unless they plan to use chemical weapons or “tactical” nukes or something. Or we’ve been deceived about troop strength and number of battle-ready troops.
