Ukraine, Russia, and the West

Same for Crimea after Russian sanctions kick in for a while and the thought police start disappearing people.

I mean in fairness to Deutsche Bank, it’s tough to be the bank that lauders money for Russian criminals if you aren’t doing any business in Russia

That’s just about the last person I want to hear predictions of a Russian loss from.

Well that dude just prognosticated all of my most optimistic hopes for how this turns out. Let’s see if he’s right!

He’s the End of History dude. The current invasion of Ukraine is just one of many examples that have proven him spectacularly wrong.

Ah. Well, nevertheless.

2 days ago a lot of twitter accounts were saying Kyiv was going to be encircled in 3 days. Don’t think that’s happening.

This has a bunch of polls as of 2014:

Seems like they wanted to stay in Ukraine but trade/align with Russia rather than the EU.

Edit: Notably, 26-27% in the South/East considered the overthrow of Yanukovych to be a coup. Significantly lower than I would have expected.

Don’t. Fuck. With. Ukrainians.

That guy is drenched in Iraqi blood and bears direct responsibility for every disastrous 21st century foreign adventure the US has been involved with.

When does Ukraine get its apology from Seinfeld?

He has at least appeared to turn against neoconservativism, beginning with him switching course on the Iraq War and announcing he would not vote for Bush in 2004.

“Fukuyama began to distance himself from the neoconservative agenda of the Bush administration, citing its excessive militarism and embrace of unilateral armed intervention, particularly in the Middle East. By mid 2004, Fukuyama had voiced his growing opposition to the Iraq War[32] and called for Donald Rumsfeld’s resignation as Secretary of Defense.” Francis Fukuyama - Wikipedia

His books aren’t in code or anything, they can be read and his arguments evaluated on their merits.

To articulate this a bit more, what the internet seems to be crediting to lol_botox struck me as more of a “prednisone face.” Not sure how many instances you’ve seen of people who’ve blown up on a high doses of steroids, but it’s a bit more nuanced than simply “puffy face” that people are pointing out. There’s a specific look / caricature it has a tendency to create that includes flushed chipmunk cheeks with a thin and waxy / plasticky appearance to the skin:

This lady is on steroids, but of course I’m sure reddit experts would say it’s a classic case of failed botox / facelift. Most famous case might be Ashley Judd:

The clip I saw of Putin on TV earlier had an element of this, although considerably more subtle. The psychiatric manifestations of corticosteroids are well known and wouldn’t necessarily correlate to the degree of change in his appearance. So it doesn’t seem implausible for him, but if we’re going with covid paranoia, I’ll float another idea, not because I think it’s terribly likely but because we live in the dumbest possible timeline: What if he’s a True Believer in horse paste therapies and is hopped up on dexamethasone? Even low doses of that shit can make you crazy in short order. It’s considerably more powerful than some of the other commonly-prescribed steroids like prednisone / prednisolone with psychiatric manifestations of mania, delirium, and psychosis all possible, albeit not exceedingly likely, shortly after beginning treatment.
