Ukraine, Russia, and the West

Wow. I thought I’d run out of reasons to hate him, and there you go, giving me one more.

Maybe they were just practicing they’ve had serious problems hitting airfields lately

It’s hard to imagine that Russia can sustain anything like a multi-year war in Ukraine, this shit is expensive, it’s a big country and they don’t even have air superiority. Their supply lines will be subjected to guerrilla and drone attacks.

My best guess is that bombardment of cities will increase to put pressure on the Ukrainian government to make a deal, but I have no idea what happens if this doesn’t work. I don’t see Putin being willing to destroy Kyiv completely, for example, but I also don’t see him being willing to take an unambiguous L on this war. I don’t know what gives first if things just continue to get worse and worse for Russia. I would assume, and hope, that there will be pressure from NATO for Ukraine to accept any kind of reasonable deal in order to avoid Putin getting into one of those situations we’ve discussed where all his options are hopeless.

Russia’s original plans were to have the bulk of Ukraine in 15 days.

Well, he will seal himself in something.

it’s also laughable to say alcohol consumption declined under him. alcohol started getting sold as “medicinal” infusions, which also allowed lower quality product to be sold to the rubes. you should check out dozens of stories of methanol poisoning sometimes.

This is supposed to be the “easy” part of the invasion though. It’s hard to see how it’s supposed to get better for Russia, especially as the West has been quick to support and increase support for Ukraine.

Odekolon is medicinal, right? I remember these jokes from when I was 13, didn’t realise it was still a thing. Apparently, it is.

(Odekolon is cheap aftershave)

It’s crazy to think of a world where Ukraine pretty much rolls over, or even what might have happened if Zelensky accepted the US offer to flee.

Europe wouldn’t be as united. There would be sanctions but they’d pass, and it would just become accepted that Russia was going to take Ukraine at some point.

Wherever global politics goes from here, Ukraine’s resistance in 2022 will have played a huge role. Hard to make a better advertisement for democracy over authoritarianism.

Recommend watching Winter on Fire about the 2014 Revolution. Definitely pro-(Western)Ukrainian but doesn’t cover up use of force and violence by Ukrainian side.

Definitely fair to characterize the overthrow of Yanukovych as a coup d’etat but also undeniable that the Western Ukrainian people saw that he was blantantly turning Ukraine into a Putin thug mafia state and they had to stop him now or forever hold their peace.

Ending spoiler:

Months of protests climax with Yanukovych’s police sniping protestors. Next day, Edem type loser politicians (led by Klitschko) announce that they have finally gotten Yanukovych to agree to new elections…… in December (it’s currently February). Protestors say we are no dummies, Yanukovych is just going to kill/arrest all our leaders in those 10 months. Head of a militia grabs the mic and says “tell that murderer to resign by tomorrow morning or else we are going to switch from defending our people to offense.” Edem type loser gulps…… next morning, Yanukovych flees the country and Parliament votes to remove him

This is similar to my line of thinking as well, but obv it could be a lot of things including nothing.

Supposedly he is super proud of never showing emotion. Maybe Botox face is on purpose.

If I was him I wouldn’t be getting a lot of sleep right now. Lack of beauty sleep wouldn’t help his looks.

It makes sense Russia would be hitting lightly used airfields in Western Ukraine, that’s the best bet for where the Ukrainian air force is hiding.

That and there’s speculation an important MiG repair shop was there.

Sounds like a blueprint for dealing with a Trump second term.

Maybe the Russians are giving up on Odessa. Going for one last push to encircle Kyiv and then make demands, or something.

Odessa looks like an amazing city that I would very much like to visit someday. It would be heartbreaking to see it leveled.

Anyone have an idea of what the results would be for a new referendum in Donbas if it were patrolled by UN peacekeepers with no Russian troops around and if such a referendum can be structured to allow parts of the region to stay in Ukraine so it’s not an all-or-nothing vote?
