Ukraine, Russia, and the West

Wiki says Western companies put up half the financing:

For Nord Stream 2, the loan from Uniper, Wintershall Dea, OMV, Engie, and Royal Dutch Shell covers 50% of the project costs of €9.5 billion. The rest is being financed by Gazprom.

Nord Stream - Wikipedia.

Apparently the long Russian convoy has dispersed according to Maxar.

Damnit.

i know this will come as a shock but it’s very likely western companies were greased to do it with russian money.

An open letter to Putin calling on him to stop the war has been published, signed by 44 Russian chess masters. Signatories include Nepomniachtchi, Dubov, Esipenko, Svidler, Alekseenko and from the women Kosteniuk and Gunina. Grischuk is not a signatory but has made anti-war comments elsewhere. I think Karjakin is the only GM to make publicly pro-Russian comments.

Edit: Apparently the players currently playing in the Grand Prix in Belgrade weren’t asked to sign. Vitiugov and Andreikin have already made anti-war comments in addition to Grischuk.

The US is in fact better than Russia.

Lol at you for thinking we’re any better. Don’t be so naive.

(See how easy that is to say and how uncomfortable it is to try to refute?)

I think what triggered me, and I am not easily triggered, was this one paragraph email from her a few days back:

The Russians here will understand, but this is… something.

“Наши”, konechno, vsegda horoshii.

All I got was babushka, I think.

There are at least 2 people ITT who will get it. The rest can use google translate, but it’s not the same. And I am pretty much the worst translator in the world. People think that just because you can speak two languages, you can translate between them. That is very untrue, translation is a specific skill, and especially simultaneous interpretation.

All good - for a trip to Russia 7-8 years ago, I learned the alphabet, figuring it would help get around the country a little bit (which it did), even if I didn’t understand what words meant. I’ve forgotten most of it, but with some context, every now and then I am able to read few words.

Wish you all the best in dealing with your family. It must be a very difficult situation. And thanks for sharing because it helps shed light on the mindset of the Russian people.

My stepdad is Scottish, and when I was about 12, my mom took him and me back to live in Russia for a year. He spoke zero words of Russian, but was a very practical guy, and could always get by.

He would figure out where he was on the subway by comparing the “symbols” on the map with the “symbols” on the wall of the station. He lasted a year! Guy spoke zero Russian, and didn’t even know the alphabet.

i got similar problems dude.

meanwhile, arestovich has given a lot of quite extreme takes over the years, but man, he called the last 4 weeks perfectly in this interview from 2019 (!). maybe you’ll think this could break through a brainwashed mind, because he definitely sounds like he could snap soloviev and other channel 24 talk show hosts in two if given the chance.

While the combined total of those donations isn’t colossal by any means—a whopping $59.95

Sad!

In light of the charges against Branson, Gabbard intends to donate the contributions to a charity, the spokesperson said.

Lol. Is it so hard to register as a foreign agent? She could have just done that and she would be fine?

I was proud I could recognize the two most important words in Cyrillic for travelers - bank and beer.
