Ukraine, Russia, and the West

My sister-in-law and my girlfriend met their first Ukrainian refugees. A mother with a ~20 year old daughter and ~6 year old son approached them and asked in very broken English if they knew a hotel nearby.
They had been on the road for 4 days and are on on their way to Spain where they have relatives/know people. My girlfriend said there were all crying when she walked them to their hotel room.

If you want to read shit from the dumbest people in America, type ‘Russia cancel culture’ into the twitter search.

It’s gross though

And if you wanted to read the dumbest stuff from people in Ukraine, searched ukraine news in twitter two weeks ago gave me 75% of results being Canadians comparing Trudeau to hitler and saying what was going on in Ottowa was worse than anything the Russians could do!

errr wat?

Lots of tweets saying ‘forget UKRAINE, Trudeau is hitler’ etc etc. Was crazy. Fucking twitter.

Ukrainians were saying Trudeau was hitler?

Seen a sudden spike in Ukrainian accounts in my area on Tinder.

Feels weird to say that but it’s true.

Cancel culture is a good thing.

Nah Canadians. This was pre-invasion so I guess not a lot of Ukrainian sources getting into twitter algo.

Sanctions should be strong, but this shouldnt be the goal. We should always be looking for plausible off ramps.

Sanctions are just a form of war where we can pretend our hands are clean.

The off-ramp is devastating Russia so badly that there’s a chance the people turn on Putin and force internal regime change.

At some point, we will need to push for sanctions against the Russian energy sector, although I wouldn’t mind just blowing up Nord Stream 1.

Sort of. Sanctions can be rolled back where as people that are dead in a shooting war stay dead. In this case sanctions also lessen the chances of nuclear war compared with armed fighting. Importantly, the goal of sanctions isnt to destroy Russia. It is to end the armed conflict and strengthen the hand in post war negotiations. Most everyone is not as keen on nuclear brinksmanship as you are, and for good reason.
