Ukraine, Russia, and the West

UA just got some new MIG-29s.

I’ve been in the UK since 1990. My mom brought me here when I was 8.

I mean, it’s not quite all that straightforward and my relationship with my family is complicated to say the least, but this is certainly not the thread for it. Anyway, I’m in London.

Ukraine doesn’t control the air. It’s contested but both sides are still flying bombing missions.

It’s a bad long term strategy.
It’s the only strategy if he wants to take Kiev without turning it to ash. Every street coming in is barracaded and manned.

Ukraine’s air defenses seem to be pretty formidable. I feel like if Putin could have neutralized them he already would have. I feel like if he could actually unleash a massive bombing campaign that wouldn’t result in massive Russian casualties and the loss of many/most of the planes he deployed he would have already done it.

So what that leaves is lobbing longer ranged dumb projectiles indiscriminately at Ukraine. That’s absolutely not going to move the needle at all and will probably just make them even madder which is saying something.

i don’t think either side has air superiority. RU air strikes have been lower last two days, compared to first 2.

It worked ok for the Russians in Stalingrad. It’s not possible to keep hundreds of thousands of people resupplied by air in a war zone. More importantly, the Russians have a lot of work to do to truly encircle Kyiv. The area east of town is all Ukrainian held. Maybe if Russians were able to destroy the bridges by air, most of town is west of the river.

NATO planes flying in = sitting duck for anti aircraft weapons once a perimeter is established.

Zero chance NATO cargo planes start flying to Kyiv. Besides the domestic political problems Air Force troops in Ukraine would pose, getting a plane shot down would be a big propaganda problem.

It wasn’t disinfo. Putin needed to take the city by today to prevent a drawn out urban dog fight, block by block, which will lead to massive casualties from both sides.

Ukrainians turned Kiev into a porcupine.

Do UK right-wingers generally have the same love affair with Putin as USA#1 right-wingers?

No. UK right wingers are not my favourite people, but they’d roughly line up with the USA#1’s democrats on the political spectrum. We have fascists USA#1-type right wingers over here too, but they don’t have any seats in parliament.

Maybe unarmed Red Cross planes or something - dare him to shoot them down.

Ukrainian propaganda is elite.

in 2012, boris johnson attended the annual Russian Festival in London, made jokes in russian, ate crepes, and basically personallly welcomed every russian national with 7+ digits to their barclays accounts.

You think I ever liked Boris? I’ve been against Boris ever since he was mayor of London. Except, at that time, I thought he was just a lying buffoon. Clearly, like many, I underestimated the weaselly little bastard.

At least the motherfucker is doing the right thing now. Better late than never.

no, not you. i meant that the UK right wing was pretty chummy with putin’s money right up to now.

Yeah, but they are not actual fascists like US republicans. They still respect democracy and stuff.

i hope so!

I will say Boris >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Trump.

The world would literally be fucked right now if Trump was still president. I will never forgive the otherwise normal (IE - not avowed fascist) people in the US who thought voting for Trump either time was a good idea. Shit like this is why you don’t vote for a narcissistic lunatic.
