Ukraine, Russia, and the West

i did not expect they would find another button to mash, but wow they did

What is the correct way to pronounce Kyiv?

I still say it as Kiev which is how it was spelled when I grew up.

Also is it still Chicken Kiev, or is it now Chicken Kyiv.

I’m going to bed. If anyone wants to listen in - this is the only livestream I’ve found that actually has sound from Kyiv. You can tell it’s real because the church bell goes off every 15 minutes, and when the air raid sirens just went off, a bunch of people also posted it on twitter. Good luck and may Kyiv still be standing strong when I wake up!

Is there an ‘r’ sound in there at the beginning?

It seems like when Ukrainians who speak English or Americans and Brits who spent a lot of time in Ukraine say it in English it sounds almost like Keev with a tiny bit of an i sound before the v.

No.

Have you watched GermanGuy’s video? I’ve watched it twice now and I swear she puts an ‘r’ sound in there. Am I just hearing things? Haven’t heard that before.

VSU released another set of totals of enemy losses.

steadily going up. although commanders are mum and somber about their own body count, which i expect to be 1000-2000 army and thousands of civilians.

I hear it too but it’s like the r in Spanish ‘rio’. Maybe you hear different sounds based on the languages you know.

I can see how it feels that way. Here’s another person doing it. When she starts pronouncing it slowly, then speeds it up, you can hear how the illusion of an r sound appears.

Yeah, that’s the first time I’ve heard anyone say it that way. Also if we’re being proper, it’s not Ukraine it’s more like ooh-crane-ee or something like that.

I think it is just a lot of aspiration on the [k] sound.

Ukraine in Ukrainian is closer to oo-krah-ee-nah.

I think the „ee“-ending is some grammatical variation as in Слава Україні (glory TO Ukraine)

I don’t hear an r here. Ukrainians wouldn’t make very convincing pirates.

Ah ok, that’s where I kept hearing it, in that phrase.

I don’t really trust that lady’s pronunciation from GG’s video as it seems different than native Ukranians. The best way imo, is to use Forvo b/c it has examples from natives:

I don’t see why Putin cares that much about #5, and if his goal was to go from 123->6, he’d want to invade in early 2024.
