i used a sarcastic futurama quote to deal with the horror. on the contrary, i sometimes read your posts as gleeful that your boy meashreimer’s original nato take is now unfalsifiable.
not only american.
Just imagine being some sad sap of a natsec reporter who had to fly out from his cool digs in the Baltic to go to fucking Montana to cover a spy balloon, all because his boss got a phone call from the lizard people who secretly control the media.
Um, because Russia using nukes was always Putin bluster, everyone including Putin knows it, and anyone who claims otherwise is either stupid or lying?
I’d really love just one honest answer from these morons.
Like, North Korea is a nuclear power. What if they were to send 100,000 troops across the 38th Parallel into the South? Does the West stand down because poppin fresh Kim has nukes? I mean we have seen much more evidence of DPRK’s willingness to use nukes than Russia’s.
What about Pakistan? Say hypothetically they committed to all-out invasion to take all of Kashmir and India did not have nukes and called for US aid. Do we abandon India during their darkest hours because nukes?
Basically do we lay down and let whatever bad actors do whatever the fuck they want when and wherever they want, simply because they have nukes and threaten to use them? If so, we may as well pack it in now.
Gotta love the bloodthirsty libs dehumanizing the bad guys because natsec reporters told them they eat babies. Tale as old as time.
Did Afganistan have nukes? What if Afganistan had nukes? What if Afganistan had more nukes than even USA#!? Would the C-35’s have ever have landed in Afganistan in the first place?
Hopefully Missle Command is more awake than Balloon Command
stand by
The US and South Korea are allies. So it’d be war. And of course there’s like a US division stationed in Korea so we’d be a party to the war immediately, before even a political decision is made.
Yeah probably. Because India and the US are not allies.
We should protect our formal allies and not get involved in wars that there’s no compelling US interest at stake. Is there a compelling interest in protecting Pakistan from India or India from Pakistan? I say we let those guys figure it out, it’s their subcontinent they can probably work things out without any help from Uncle Sam.
Also, “engineered panic” is doing a lot of work here.
The obvious play here is to say the Brits should lead the international response since it’s their former colonies and then blame everything on them anyway
Everyone knows that the list of US allies is an immutable fact of the universe
Theres a real false dichotomy here.
It isnt a choice between.
- Resist invasion at all costs ignoring nukes. Or
- “Lay down and take it because nukes”
countries with nukes needed to be treated very different. It’s a game where both sides lose if it escalates. So neither wants to start.
So what you see is exactly as expected. You try and be very clear when facing a nuclear power and make it so that the other nuclear power cant exploit you by invading and call your bluff. This is why the border with NK is 15km of mines, dugouts, tank traps and artillery. This is why the NATO security guarentee is so ironclad.
Ukraine is tricky because the US didnt think it could draw a line that would disincentivise russia from invading. So it didnt.
The whole game changes when Kiev didn’t fall. Now theres this uncertain game where neither side wants to escalate, but they need to be really careful. But it seems that the US can resist.
To simplify. The whole game is “what are you gonna do. Nuke me?”
The best response to that is almost always “no”
Russia played that game in Crimea and when it invaded Ukraine. The US is playing it now.
@SenorKeeed it’s Friday. Any comment?

Seems like the best outcome we’d want, to push Russia out of Ukraine as much as possible, the come to some agreement with Russia and then get Ukraine in the EU. Getting Ukraine into the EU seems like the ultimate victory condition. He mentions East West Berlin and North and South Korea as examples with Berlin as a complete victory and Korea as the second best option.
It is kind of depressing how much failure can be tolerated in autocratic regimes as long as they suppress the opposition.
yeah when putin croaks, one way or another, i don’t see anyone in russia top circle not using LDNR as a way to buy some time and good will from the eu at the first opportunity. the region is poor after years of abuse by the occupiers, pushilin will have a giant target on his back. the only value left is a trade chip at the end of the war. it wouldn’t even have to be a capitulation or anything. most soldiers will happily cross the border and go home if the siloviki are not aiming at their backs. i don’t know if zaluzhnuj would ultimately go for Donetsk or Luhansk right away. probably not, but otoh if a power vacuum occurs in LDNR, who knows
Biden in Ukraine, what would happen if the Russians bomb the city right now?
Like if a Russian cruise missile kills the American president? Probably open war between the US and Russia.
