Ukraine Invasion 2: no more Black Sea fleet for you

I thought any fresh conscripts would come from the new Russian territories. Seems like a reason to vote no, if votes are actually counted. Extra bodies seem pointless if they are untrained, poorly equiped, and unmotivated. There’s definitely a ??? step in here somewhere.

The newly conquered territory has already been scraped bare of military age men.

The whole of the Donbas? Then what are we even talking about?

The rest of Russia proper.

Well in that case holy shit. At one point I thought there was a good chance he’d do that but he seemed afraid to. Circumstances are much worse now for him. That would be desperate.

Need an Atlantic piece on how international relations are just like poker, what with the lack of clear outcomes and the psychological ploys and other shenanigans going on these days.

If there is a referendum the results will 100% be what the Kremlin wants it to be.

There’s got to be a decent chance there’s an ongoing coup right now, right? For him to delay this speech into tomorrow morning.

Nonzero, I guess, but “decent” sounds way too high to me.

I’d say about the same odds as Trump spending a single day in jail. More likely that he’s just opening up some more windows for his enemies to accidentally fall out of.

Decent means 10-20% chance, and that’s not chances of it being successful, just underway.

Yeah, that is how I interpret decent, too, and I think that is way too high. I am still sub 1 percent.

Announcing a big speech and then canceling is a level of winging it not conducive to success in major geopolitical events.

Someone was probably like, “wWell, if we do this there are these other 15 negative effects we should consider.”

Putin looking a lot like Trump. “Well, well, well, if isn’t the entirely predictable consequences of my actions.”

Paywalled, but I doubt the WSJ gives any credit to anarchists

Anarchism in Ukraine - Wikipedia.

In the wake of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, Ukrainian anarchists were among those that joined the Territorial Defense Forces, with a group calling itself the Resistance Committee [ca] establishing an anti-authoritarian “international detachment” in Kyiv.[159] A separate anarchist detachment called Black Flag was also set up in response to the Russian invasion.[160] Since the start of the conflict, about 100 Ukrainian anarchists and 20 foreign anarchists have reportedly signed up to fight in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, with one claiming they were “fighting to protect the more or less free society that exists in Ukraine”.[161]

Anarchism has more history in Ukraine than just about anywhere.

I think the reason they aren’t generating any headlines is that they are 120 people. They may well be 120 honorable, heroic people, but I am also sure that I could find a lot of groups of 120 honorable, heroic Ukrainians in this conflict.

120 is just the people who signed up. Anarchists often don’t do things officially.

That would explain the complete ineffectiveness of anarchists everywhere and at all times.

Hard to train mobilized recruits with no trainers.

OK, really, that’s great and honorable and self-consistent. It also should not be the least bit shocking that disorganized, unofficial people aren’t getting official recognition.
