no that show was doomed from the concept. the best part of daily show for me was and still is the correspondents. when klepper, cordry, jessica williams, wyatt cenac and many others are reporting from the road, it’s the funniest thing ever. every time they tried to put correspondents behind an anchor/host desk it failed.
colbert report worked because it was like a long-form performative deep-dive into the cablenews-sphere, never breaking character. john oliver works because it’s still long-form journalism. whereas both nightly show and klepper were just awful imitations of someone behind a desk. it was not compelling, just like alex jones isn’t really compelling if you are not a nutjob, and bill maher isn’t compelling if you are not a douchebag just watching for the dunks.
klepper’s recent series is all reporting from the road and it’s truly awesome.
i really thought they should have followed daily show with a show format like 60 minutes, reports and interviews that go on for 5-10 minutes instead of 3-4. i don’t know if it’s possible to do on comedy central budget four times a week, but i would have watched that.
i watched it too. (it’s canceled now right? ). i would say hassan over wyatt, but that’s exactly what i’m talking about. it’s much more long-form journalism.
I always forget John Oliver in this list. He is such his own entity now. Like, I dont look at Colbert and think “Former Daily Show consultant.” Same thing with Oliver.
Yeah. I liked Patriot Act as well. It was basically the same as John Oliver, but with a different guy and he was standing instead of sitting. I was very surprised it was canceled. It was a quality show.
I tend to agree that charging people who are underage as adults is not a good a idea. That human brain development isn’t complete until around age 25, is enough of a reason not to, imo. Are you familiar with the concept of restorative vs retributive justice? If so any thoughts? Either way, what do you envision when you say a “nation should confront problems rather than cast aside”?
I think he will be charged roughly 10% as harshly as if his name was Jamal. Oh, and he’ll be acquitted.
Gonna have a hard time convincing me to show compassion to this murderer. He’s an unrepentant monster, and will be on the Right Wing grifter speaking circuit for the rest of his life.
In what way does Rittenhouse need to be rehabilitated? He’s not some moron who doesn’t know better. Being in prison is very unlikely to make him a better person. He drove a long ass time, carrying an assault rifle and intended to use it. If he was brown we’d call him a terrorist.
Unless we want to lock up every person who commits a murder indefinitely, then we as a society will need to rehabilitate those people, including Rittenhouse. Since, as you say, prison is very unlikely to make him a better person, then we should explore better methods of administering justice in our communities.
I’m absolutely for rehabilitating people who show remorse, who didn’t know better or give us any reason to believe they can be rehabilitated. Rittenhouse does not fit in with this. He is leaning into his deplorableness. He is more likely to be a speaker at the next RNC then say he is sorry for killing people.
