Somewhat of a tangent, but the problem isn’t that Mitch is evil. The problem is that we have a political system that elevates someone like Mitch to such a high position of power and encourages his behavior. If Mitch went away tomorrow, someone else just like him will take his place. The goal is to create a system where people like Mitch fail.
Is Mitch overrated as a legislative genius? I think his caucus is inclined to obstruct as much as possible and I’m not sure if he can move them if his goals required them to actually do stuff.
That’s what I thought until the Trump presidency. The guy played the Obama era and the Trump era close to GTO and I’m tired of pretending like he isn’t impressively good at his job because he’s the enemy. He’s the one who made every choice about the political direction of this country since 2010 and he got basically everything he wanted done.
On what bills did he push Republicans to accept something they didn’t really want?
I guarantee you there was some significant fretting behind closed doors during the last 4 years and he kept it from coming to a boil. Not doing a second stimulus bill with the Democrats probably wasn’t super popular with the Senators with elections they were projected to lose for instance.
During the Obama era he’s the one who made the call to go full obstructionist, and when he did it it wasn’t obvious they wouldn’t be punished for it electorally. The man literally created this meta by taking the low level sniping that had characterized politics since the contract with America and escalating it into a full scale political war.
I know there was reporting suggesting that McConnell couldn’t get 40 votes for a second stimulus bill if he wanted one.
I really doubt that if Mitch McConnell wanted a stimulus we wouldn’t have one. He would just need Democratic votes to pass it.
I get where you’re coming from, and it’s definitely possible, but I think Mitch McConnell is the best the other side has had probably ever. Possibly as good at the game of politics as LBJ. The guys defense is just smothering. Smothering might be the perfect adjective to describe Mitch’s game actually. The guy isn’t close to anyone either. He’s a weird dude.
Defense is actually pretty easy in the Senate because of the filibuster.
You only know that because of Mitch Mcconnell.
Mitch’s handling of DJT is what was most impressive. Essentially convinced DJT to hand over policy to Mitch in exchange for personal protection. DJT knows that Mitch’s corporate plutocracy is not popular, he’d go for populist nationalism all day, everyday if he could.
Then Mitch convinced his caucus, who all know how abhorrent Trump is, to go along with the trade of protection for policy. All while INCREASING popular support for his Senators and leaving DJT out to dry to lose re-election. Insane… and don’t think any of it is an accident. Mitch playing along with the stolen election while doing nothing to help Trump actually stay in power is just the latest iteration of it.
Listening to Rush, man he’s furious, I love it. Wonder if he lives long enough to see the inauguration.
If he makes it to 2021, he’s at the top of my death list for next year’s contest.
That seems optimistic.
Rush’s brain really I’m stuck in the 90s. He’s constantly throwing out references to Bill Clinton and Lewinsky and various obscure 90’s political events that I don’t even remember.
Klepper is ridiculously good at thinking on his feet. The Jets line was gold.
Thank god the Venn diagram of these people and people with more than 10 guns in a circle.
My one saving grace with all this is my teenage kids are going to be competing with those peoples kids and grandkids
No idea why his show bombed. Guy is terrific.
I think he had a hard time finding the right tone. Like, it seemed like he was going for the Colbert Report if it was making fun of Alex Jones instead of Bill O’Reilly, but in the episodes I watched he never really leaned into the character like Colbert did.
