Iā€™ve been banned so many times I didnā€™t bother trying to argue.

I did PM one person and yelled at them though.

Did you go to Syracuse?

No was too expensive and wanted to get away. Lived here for almost my whole life tho.

Iā€™ve been going through the top college coaches and, outside of my guy Jay Wright, every single one of them seems like an absolute scumbag. Like man. Boeheim, coach k, Roy Williams, bill self, Calipari. They all just ooze sleaze. Tony Bennet is probably the next best coach who seems like a good dude. I donā€™t really have an opinion on Izzo so I could be convinced there I guess.

Pat Fitzgerald seems nice enough, and I like the fact that the NU grad rate is always excellent I like - but I donā€™t have any illusions that I know much about him.

Speaking of the few good dude coaches, my brother once had lunch with John Wooden at Woodenā€™s house. I donā€™t remember the circumstances, but it was just like he emailed him asking some questions and Wooden invited him over.

Yeah I was talking about good coaches though :yum:

Oh okay, so you understand the makeup of the sports fanbase there pretty well. It would have been too expensive for me, too, I was lucky to get some academic aid, loans and parental aid.

If Fitzgerald was coaching Michigan they wouldnā€™t get their shit pushed in on a yearly basis by Ohio State.

Sometimes itā€™s funny who you can randomly get a hold of if you try. My senior year at SU, I was doing a piece for the student radio station on Miami Universityā€™s ā€œCradle of Coachesā€ when Syracuse played them. One of the coaches who got his start there was Ara Parseghian, and I wanted to get an interview with him. I couldnā€™t get to him through the school, and I knew going through Notre Dame was useless as a student at the public radio student station at Syracuse, but wouldnā€™t you know, he had two listed phone numbers? One was a winter home, one was his normal home. His wife answered, yelled for him, and I got an interview with him on the spot.

Obviously no personal experience with any of these people, but Mike Brey and Mark Few donā€™t seem scummy.

Heh, if you had known me then I could have connected you with Weeb Eubank, Randy Ayers, and Bo Schembechler.

Weeb retired to Oxford and my mother was his physical therapist until he passed. My father knew the other two through University connections.

Sounds like Syracuse is a lot like Oxford, OH. Townies who are mostly liberal professors and staff at the university, then people from the surrounding farms/rural areas who are right of the KKK. Like, this happened when I was in high school (no, i didnā€™t write this):

Yeah outside your guy.

Give me a fucking break.

Yeah Iā€™m sure all top high school basketball players want to play for a private Catholic research university based out of Radnor Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania.

Get real, if you arenā€™t cheating you arenā€™t trying

Jay Wright literally looks like heā€™s in the mafia.

Iā€™ve been to Oxford once, for the aforementioned game. Itā€™s much smaller and quainter than Syracuse. I recall it having that picturesque, cute midwestern town feel. Syracuse is more like a small big city, when I was there it was transitioning from rust belt toward more of an information based economy. The city itself has a fair amount of racial tension, due to de facto segregation.

The ā€œtowniesā€ in Syracuse are considered the people who are totally unaffiliated with the university. Theyā€™re often resentful of the students, but fans of the sports programs. So youā€™ve got the students and professors and staff who are mostly liberal, the city townies who are mostly liberal but more blue collar liberal. Then the surrounding areas sound like theyā€™re about the same as the ones near Oxford. You get out into the typical suburban areas, and then the rural areas would be as bright red and pro-Trump as any rural areas in America.

Of course thatā€™s all very over generalized, there are plenty of residents of Syracuse who grew up there and wouldnā€™t fit very well into any of the groupsā€¦ But those are the people and dynamics I think are at play in whatā€™s going on and the reaction on Syracuse sports fan message boards.

This is extra upsetting to me because my time at Syracuse helped to start to turn my political beliefs from center-right to where they are now by giving me a better framework in which to understand the world, a better understanding of political issues, and exposing me to a wider range of ideas than Iā€™d gotten growing up. That said, it wasnā€™t very diverse - I was blessed to have exposure to a ton of diversity in high school, though.

Also my night in Oxford was crazy. We somehow made it from one party to the next, befriending some people on campus and tagging along. If I recall correctly, kickoff for that game was at noon so we had to be there around 10:30. I donā€™t know how we made it lolā€¦ I think we were at a party until 4 or 5 am and didnā€™t manage to get back to the hotel until like 6am. Our group got split up, it was like slow motion chaos. And this was, of course, before Uber and such. So getting back to the hotel was actually a chore.

I always thought Jay Wright was clean, and I havenā€™t heard much talk about him otherwise. Looks like they had some minor recruiting violations and thatā€™s about it for his tenure of now almost 20 years. Theyā€™ve been a high profile program for decades, theyā€™re 18 miles from Center City Philadelphia, and they play some of their home games at the Wells Fargo Center. Itā€™s a big time program. They were in the Big East during its peak, and theyā€™ve managed to keep it going since the conference re-alignment.

And I say all that as a Syracuse fan.

True, but the next time I see Boeheim wear a matching suit will be the first. At least Jay Wright has style.

Oh a Boehiem fan thinking Jay Wright is clean. The two fanbases that think they are still above the fray. Fuck off Boehiem and Wright are as dirty as the rest of them.

EVERYONE CHEATS

NCAA IS CORRUPT

DEAL WITH IT

Iā€™m not a Boeheim fan, you should see what I said about him farther up in the thread before you lump me in.

Okay, Coach Cal fan. JLawYeahOkay.gif
