How James Polk became president is a really interesting story, it’s something Sorkin and the West Wing probably wishes they could have pulled off. He was almost a nobody, had lost a governors race back to back, and was initially running to just be the VP. Nobody else could get enough support to be the presidential nominee, Polk didn’t even receive a single vote at the convention until the 8th ballot, and then won it on the 9th ballot. He was the one Democrat who supported the Annexation of Texas, and ended up being a true compromise candidate (helped that he was backed by the horrible Andrew Jackson).
All of that happened while Polk wasn’t even at the convention, he was home in Tennessee. It’s a crazy story.
I’ll take some shame if it helps us win. Truly surprised that is too much for you as you seem to be aware of what is at stake.
Also, as pointed out above, you’re really just lying to the screeners. If you actually get on TV people might assume you are one, but you won’t actually have to say anything to confirm it on TV. You just ask your question. And if you get the question out, it will be obvious what you are doing there.
As someone who has attended pop culture conventions and then lied to the screener so I could ask my REAL but terrible question to my favorite actor, I’d like to endorse this strategy
“Mr. President sir, since it is obvious you are innocent of all these false allegations, when will you be taking the DNA test in your rape case? And when will you be suing all of those women you said you would sue after the last election was over? Thank you for smiling and God Bless!”
What media boy doesn’t get here is that this isn’t a drill. It’s not the traditional fictional narrative three-act structure balancing where we pretend shit is normal by asking tough questions to both sides. There’s a real killer on the loose this time and Very Concerned Dog is interrogating the good guys with questions the killer himself submitted:
Yeah I have no issue with lying to screeners, I just wouldn’t want people to see it and think I was ever for a millisecond considering Trump. That would feel about the same to me as going on TV and saying you’re a rapist or pedophile or something.
Like it’s a good strategy for getting a question in and making him look bad, and more power to anyone willing to do it… Just not something I’d want to do.
I assume in this hypothetical though that we’re saying your bait and switch would move Trump’s chances of losing up three or four points. At that point you just take a bullet, no?
