Johnson dropped out after barely winning the New Hampshire primary in March(!).
bartlett >>> than any of these other fictional presidents.
I know the general outlines of it, but I always confirm stuff like this before posting. I knew Coolidge, for example, but had to look up Arthur. It seems like Arthur had health issues and went through the motions of trying to get re-nominated, but he didn’t really want it and was trying to protect the actions of his first term.
I know nothing of the Cochimi and have only surface knowledge about Maximillian. Fact-checking this kind of stuff involves recognizing things that can be wrong and looking them up. I wouldn’t be good at catching things that were believed to be true thirty years ago but which have been invalidated by more recent scholarship. I feel like that’s the sort of thing that the scholar you are working with might be catching. I can go a couple of a level deeper than Wikipedia, but I wouldn’t be able to give the sort of fact checking that requires knowledge of primary sources.
Dale said she was pleased with Trump’s response, but it wouldn’t be enough to sway her vote. She plans to vote for Biden during Florida’s early-voting period, which begins on Monday.
“The other question that I had in mind was: ‘Mr. Trump, you say you believe in science and what the scientists have to say. The scientists have clearly proven that carbon pollution is a cause of global warming, yet you deny climate change. How do you reconcile your denial of climate change with your assertion that you believe the scientists?’” Dale told New Times .
“He’s very combative and he doesn’t believe in science, and that’s a big concern to me,” she said. “And by his own words, he knows more than the [military] generals, knows more than the public-health experts, knows more than anybody. I believe Joe Biden will listen to the experts.”
The Cochimi are interesting in that their ancestors probably created the Baja cave paintings - considered among the 5 most prolific cave painting sites in the world. But by the time Jesuit priests arrived in Baja, they had no ancestral recollection. Also they were supposedly naked and starving most of the year, except when they could gorge on a certain cactus fruit, then it would ferment - whereupon they would get drunk and have orgies which had no bounds including incest (it’s very important to mention this in every story for some reason).
Or at least this is the story you read over and over. I suspect the story is largely embellished by Spanish priests who wanted to justify moving them into missions as neophytes to save their souls. But also it could have been that their culture was so decimated by smallpox (which would have arrived some 150 years before the Jesuits) they lost cultural knowledge, including of creating the cave paintings. The Maya lost cultural knowledge of all the amazing things their ancestors built - in just a few 100 years. Crazy. In the book 1491 the author describes a tribe in Bolivia (forget the name) whose ancestors created massive earthworks. But by the time anthropologists worked with them in the mid-20th century, after old world diseases almost wiped them out, they sounded a lot like the Cochimi - just living on the edge of survival with no knowledge of what their ancestors had built.
I’m just curious to run this theory by an expert, when I find one.
My big question about Maximillian is if this is him
lol at people never knowing what to do with their hands in these old portraits.
I took this in a mansion in San Angel - a super old money part of Mexico City, where the person who lived there (my friend happened to be dating her - weird coincidence) definitely mentioned something about her ancestor meeting Maximillian (who I sadly knew nothing about at the time). I think one of the courtiers is supposed to be her direct ancestor. Maximillian was supported by the conservatives who hated his labor-friendly predecessor and follower - Benito Juárez. So it makes since her old money family would have been one of them.
The woman in the middle sure looks like Carlotta. And the guy looks a lot like Maximilian. But he seems to be missing the ridiculous Hapsburg sideburns that he always had. I can’t find one picture or portrait of him without them. Actually - do you see sideburns? Maybe they are there? I’m thinking maybe the artist didn’t like the sideburns because no one in Mexico ever wore those - and just made them less prominent.
Here are some actual pictures of Maximillian and Carlotta. Maybe the sideburn total volume came and went.
She was like 18 I think and empress over a whole country. Seems like she really wanted to help too. But eventually the Mexicans executed Maximillian, and apparently she went back to Europe and went mad - living for 60 years locked up in a tower. Crazy story all the way around. His execution became a famous Manet painting:
Btw I have this guy on board as an actual fact checker/consultant for Mesoamerica stuff. He’s amazing. My book is actually going to be accurate! Unlike some of the actual books I’ve read so far - like the Captivating History guide to the Aztecs, Olmecs, Zapotecs and Maya - which seems to be rife with total bullshit. It’s even an audiobook. WTF
??? I mean yeah it’s not strictly population, but any non-per capita total number by state measure is not really the best.
When asked whether it was a mistake to support a 1994 law that set harsher penalties for drug possession, Joe Biden agreed that it was, as he outlined a vision for community-driven police reform and stressed that drug users should be rehabilitated, not imprisoned.
“I don’t believe anyone should be going to drug courts for drug use,” the Democratic presidential candidate said during a town hall on ABC.
Yep. Easiest snap call ever.

Was rooting for her to ask him to explain what a “filling number” is. Sounds a bit like choose your own tax burden.
You want us to go on national television and say we’re leaning Trump?
Nope.
I agree in principle but nope. Couldn’t do it.
I think he’s saying when you get screened, tell them you are leaning Trump. Then when you get to ask your question, ask what the difference between Medicare and Medicaid and embarrass him.
It was also God.
Not exactly true, he smiles at the turkey pardons. It’s one of two times I felt true empathy and sympathy for him, like, in the deep recesses of his subconscious I know part of him wishes he could’ve just been a regular old guy having a hoot at some gobbling turkeys.
i don’t know who that is but fuck yeah
Hitler liked dogs. Trump likes turkeys.
Because he was sad that he had to pardon the turkey when he wanted to kill it and eat it right along with the other turkey.
Then he realized he’d told bigger lies then that, and that he could kill two turkeys and eat twice as much.
So he smiled.
Well yes, Polk did, who I referenced in the post you replied to. LBJ kind of did.
I’m hoping that the idea already being floated means Biden and his inner circle knows there’s little chance he’d be able to handle running again at 82 and not leaving office until 86.
And Hoynes.
Suzzer, maybe I can hook you up with some academic/suitable fact-checker down here?
