A colony of sea lions at Cape Cross, Namibia. There’s 80-100,000 of them all in one place. What the photos don’t capture is how loud it the place is, or the smell!

Second picture reminds me of several I took in Bath, unfortunately I can’t seem to find them. Damn days before digital cameras.

That can be arranged!

Kinda cliche, but here’s some of the big ole cats in South Luangwa NP, in Zambia. For the best combination of wildlife spotting but also feeling like you weren’t part of tourist horde, South Luangwa was my favorite safari spot in (southern) Africa.

And bonus leopard sighting outside of the park, after dark, on our last night

Safaris are pretty cool, especially if you’ve never done one before, so I’d definitely recommend doing it at least once in your life! And they’re usually well set up for westerner tourists who are not used to traveling in places like Africa. The higher end ones are very much like Africa’s version of an all inclusive beach resort.

Just be aware you’re spending most of the day driving and not seeing much, and when big animals are spotted the other jeeps all kind of appear outta nowhere in one big crowd, but when it’s good, it’s totally worth it!

Some cool wildlife in West Papua, Indonesia. The first one is the spotted cuscus, a pretty weird looking marsupial. They’re normally shy, but this one would come to the homestay once a day for his banana. The bird is the red bird of paradise, a species (along with the Wilson’s bird of paradise) that is endemic to to the islands of Raja Ampat. It was a 5am wake up to get get a glimpse of this one and they didn’t stay long! We had to wake up at 4:30 to go find the Wilson’s bird of paradise and we got skunked, and that was the final attempt haha.

The monkeys at Uluwatu, Bali. Macaques specifically. They’re cute to look at, but they will literally steal anything they can get their hands on from the tourists. If you have something visible in an outer backpack/purse pocket, it’s gone. Good luck trying to eat a snack around here. They’ll even steal glasses off your head or a phone right out of your hands if you’re not careful!
