Pretty incredible to see an R gov make my exact point. Its a nothing story pushed to create fear of an underclass that will never have any power. Good for Cox. Pretty sad to see some in this thread with less ability to think about this critically than the fucking governor of Utah.
I lived in Utah for a couple years. Cox is not bad for an R gov. Another thing in play is that the state is so solidly red that he doesnât have to worry about a Dem getting elected gov. Paradoxically this can result in some better results in some areas, since Rs are in no danger of losing the statewide offices if they take an occasional âliberalâ stance. Plus the Mormons arenât as Trumpy. He still could be primaried obviously
My experience of Mormans is that for some reason, despite all the craziness and the religiosity, they much nicer and better humans than you would expect.
I think theres definitely some value in the tradition of the mission. Going out and experiencing new places and people is good for the culture.
Bill Perkins is an insufferable douchebag
And there wont be a single second of introspection when they read that.
Having met Katie Ledecky, her shoulders are noticeably cut, even when sheâs just standing around and not flexing after winning a race. Also a lot taller than you think she would be if you just see her on TV. But, uh, no, not a man.
Iâve always loathed sports and athletics. I wish our society valued feats of the mind, like the soviet union their kids played chess. Iâd rather this be an argument about if adderall is an illegal performance enhancing drug, because youâd be WRONG, it ISNâT a performance enhancing drug
DeSantis making proclamations
Florida governor Ron DeSantis has signed a proclamation recognising runner-up Emma Weyant as the winner of the highest US national college swimming title - an event she lost to transgender athlete Lia Thomas.
Last week Thomas became the first known transgender athlete to win the title.
She took victory in the womenâs 500-yard freestyle in Atlanta.
But on Tuesday Republican governor DeSantis said the result âundermined the integrity of the competitionâ.
Iâve met her too, and yeah, sheâs a beast.
Which makes Janet Evansâs accomplishments all the more remarkable. Like any notable small person in a big personâs world, she was one of my heroes. 5â5", 115 lb when she dominated the distance events in 88.
Remember kids, if you dont win, whine and fucking cry about it until the governor DECALRES you the winner, goddamnit.

This is a good post, but I assume that a decent percentage of this thread just reads that and unfortunately thinks that youâre just a really good Tucker Carlson.
My family is Mormon so I speak from experience. This is a highly romanticized view of missionary work. Itâs really terrible. The missionaries are not there to learn about culture. They are there to change it. The missionaries are isolated the entire time and actually donât experience much of the culture. Itâs 24/7 mission work.
I agree Mormons are generally nice but there are really racist, sexist and homophonic ideas a millimetre below the surface.
This is a direct reply to Canadamatt but I will quote ElSapo and ggoreo for context.
I originally only quoted the bolded but will quote the whole paragraph for context here. In response to these posts I asked these questions:
A few posts later @CanadaMatt3004 asked
I will try to explain as best as I can.
To me the quoted statements demand an absolutism that I disagree with. I suspect these statements are inconsistent with how many people including those who have not been labelled transphobic live their lives. I thought my questions were an easy way to point this out and allow for some nuance. While almost no one answered those questions there have been other posts that have shown that posters here do not adhere to this absolutism. More on this later.
There are people who do not fit as neatly in a binary male or female box as other people might fit. Merely acknowledging that this might be a possibility does not make one transphobic in my opinion.
So what if they donât neatly fit? It shouldnât make a difference when it comes to marriage, adoption, protection against discrimination in the workplace etc. The one place where a physical difference might make a difference is when itâs a physical competition. Maybe it does, maybe it doesnât but decrying the mere mention of the possibility as transphobia akin to right wing hysteria I think is misguided.
Two contradicting notions that have been in uttered this thread are
a) LOL sports, who cares who wins
b) itâs very important that trans people can participate
I believe b) is true exactly because a) is wrong. The Super Bowl, the Olympic games, the football world cup are the most watched tv events. If you want to make a 7 or 8 figure salary you have to be a CEO, an A-list entertainer or an athlete. Sports isnât just about pros though. Itâs an important social phenomenon: being part of a team, the joy of the game, the pride in winning and competing, or even just beating your own record.
So no, not LOL sports, and trans people should have a right to be part of that. Ideally in the group that they most identify with. So why shouldnât trans-men take part in the menâs competition and trans-women in the womenâs competition? I am not saying they shouldnât but letâs acknowledge the fact that there have been separate womenâs competition for a long time and for the obvious reason that the male physiology is advantageous in most athletic disciplines.
Again, I disagree that it is transphobic to point out this physical advantage might not evaporate completely if someone changes their gender identification or transitions from male to female. I feel there is a discussion to be had how big of an advantage there is and if that warrants certain regulations. Even these existing and hypothetical regulations must be considered transphobic if you adhere to the dogmatic mantra âeither you believe trans women are women, or you do notâ. How could you justify regulations if you are convinced that there cannot be a difference between trans and cis women? How could you not allow a trans-woman weight lifter or UFC fighter to compete without restriction?
Maybe thatâs what some advocate. Maybe some want to do away with the gender-based separation. In my opinion both these would ignore why the separation exists in the first place.
Hard to define terms like âfairnessâ or âmeaningful competitionâ have been used in this thread. Whatever you want to call it there is a demand for these separate womenâs competitions even in poker or chess.
Maybe if we look at the science (as we should) we find that there is no issue with âfairnessâ/âmeaningful competitionâ/whatever when it comes to trans athletes. Maybe it needs regulation, maybe it doesnât.
What we shouldnât do is paint any suggestion that we should even look at it as transphobic.
Should Michael Phelps have been âregulated?â He was scientifically found to have natural advantages over his competitorsâŚvery rare genetic things that made it basically âunfairâ for anyone who competed against him in his prime.
I mean, the real question here is âWho would fuck Michael Phelpsâ with the answer being, im sure, pretty much everyone.
j/k by the way Louis. I appreciate the response and will write one of my own explaining why I thought the question was off base and didnt exactly belong in this thread, but I need some time to think it through and actually type it up.
Yao Mingâs parents were set up by party cadres due to being the tallest basketball players in China.
Motherfucker stole my NBA spot.
(In fairness, this was common during that era. My in-laws also got married due to CCP match-making)
This is a thoughtful response. I would encourage you to engage with the many detailed posts on why itâs not about the question, but rather about the context. Iâll go through and pull out a couple that I think say it best.
Very few people itt say that there should be no restriction at the highest level of sport. Nor do they say that the conversation cant be held in the right context.
