For those wondering, this is the very predictable result of the ā€œjust asking questionsā€ mindset. The minute you give these people an inch they will take as much as possible.

Surprise but Caitlyn Jenner is OUT.

Saw Lia Thomas (ā€œthe trans swimmerā€ per media) did end up winning a womens national championship yesterday.

Yeah, I donā€™t know how I feel about that one.

On one hand, sure we shouldnā€™t discriminate against transgender people, and they shouldnā€™t be barred from doing things anyone could do.

On the other hand, a biological male competing against women kinda defeats the purpose of having womenā€™s sports being segregated.

Apparently Liaā€™s time was only like 9 seconds off Katie Ledeckyā€™s world record for women in this event. Lia competed in the NCAA on the menā€™s swimming team before she transitioned.

What would happen in combat sports if a transgender female started wrecking female fighters in MMA? Iā€™d find that disturbing.

Trans athletes is probably an issue that costs Democrats vote if it is allowed to become salient.

Iā€™m sorry a biological male playing womens sports is ridiculous and Iā€™d be pretty mad if my kid had to compete against that person.

Iā€™m on the other hand side of this one and I donā€™t think itā€™s that tough.

The real tough cases are people like Caster Semenya (intersex people who are just born that way).

ā€œBiological maleā€ is an insensitive term meant to invalidate trans women and that also is insensitive to the actual biology of sex and gender, which is murky at best.

Iā€™m not sure how long Lia has been out as a woman, but I do think thereā€™s a reasonable argument for trans women to be living as women and on hormone therapy for like 2-3 years before getting to compete in menā€™s athletics, but the details arenā€™t something that should be settled by cis dudes.

If Iā€™m not mistaken, that ā€œreasonable argumentā€ relies heavily on the premise that after a couple of years of hormone replacement the advantage of being born male is lost. Is that correct?

I have found that pretty hard to swallow and the studies Iā€™ve seen on the topic (it has been a while, so maybe there is some new stuff) have not been that convincing, imo.

this case doesnā€™t seem tough to me at all

the whole point of sports at the olympic level is to celebrate people who are essentially all freaks. but if theyā€™re freaky outside of some extremely narrow parameters then we suddenly donā€™t think they get to play? seems dumb IYAM

Well, I think some people want to pretend that weā€™re celebrating nothing but hard work and training, but obviously thatā€™s bullshit.

Thatā€™s where I land on that. But I guess I have an easier time seeing the other side.

Part of the problem is that it is difficult to tell if someone like that is doping on T.

I recall seeing some studies that most of the strength advantage is lost after a couple years, but itā€™s been a while since I fought this battle. I suppose thereā€™s more of an issue where limb length is a substantial part of the advantage relative to raw strength, and swimming and basketball could be such sports.

Do you support desegregation?

This is a very very very bad issue for democrats.

Up there with letting people shoot up and smoke crack on the sidewalk.

Any dem who doesnā€™t come out against trans athletes is a moron.

You can be a trans athlete but you have to complete against your own genotype.

Kinda feel that way too.

But at the same time, isnā€™t that type of strength advantage gone after some years?

Lots of people can very quickly get on board with ā€œlet people do what they want as long as it doesnā€™t mess up my life.ā€

Not very many people (myself included!) can quickly get on board with ā€œformer male swimmer becomes female swimmer and wins a national championship.ā€ Imagine if you had a kid that trained for a lifetime and lost in that race. It is easy to personalize and it plays into Americaā€™s addiction to resentment / victimhood.

Maybe this makes me a complete piece of shit, I donā€™t know and Iā€™m certainly willing to listen, but Iā€™m very sure this is a massively losing political issue for the left.
