No kink shaming!
Are you also a NYT crossword puzzler?
We got plowed from behind once when my brother stopped at a known speed trap intersection with a ridiculously short amber cycle in the rain. Dude behind us was oddly someone I went to high school with and admitted to us that he sped up to make it through, assuming that we weren’t stopping. That was ~20 years ago too before half of the drivers on the road were scrolling fucking cat gifs on Facebook. Safe driving is definitely not subjective and is completely 100% objective and should be ticketed by robots though.
If you wanna talk traffic safety, I’d start the bidding with getting motherfuckers off their phones.
This is 100% the biggest danger on the roads. So many people have their face buried in their phones while going 70mph.
Every time I see this thread (and the tofu thread) I think of something I vaguely remember from the Simpsons, on a newscast:
“Traffic cameras suck… Or do they?? Yes.”
Instead of traffic cameras at intersections, what about speeding cameras along major roads? Instead of relying on cops with a radar gun just have cameras with lidar and just automate the speeding tickets?
As someone who walks 20-30 miles/week, often at night, I’m pretty sure I’m going to get run over someday. I have to be vigilant every single time. They only have to win once.
I feel you. Before the pandemic I walked alot in Toronto. It would be normal for me to walk to and from work (about 3 miles each way) plus lots of other walking with the dog or just out running errands. Even though there are lots of pedestrians in the city I’ve had a number of close calls.
I saw two people go up on the hood of a Prius a couple months ago. They had a walk sign, but several cars were flying through the intersection running the left turn signal. They waited for those cars to pass, then took a couple of steps when the Prius came flying around from behind them as it turned right. I thought they might be dead, but thankfully it looked like both were ok.
Those cars turning left through off everyone’s timing, and distracted the pedestrians to forget to look behind them. The guy driving the Prius was blocked from seeing the corner, and had seen a green light for several seconds. Still 100% his fault.
in USA#1, the drivers adapt to such spots and start driving at speed limit, but pack themselves into a dangerous peloton.
And we have apps that tell us where this crap is anyways, in real time.
Literally everything in the USA is broken, often in the most cynical way imaginable. Solutions elsewhere will not work here.
Here in Canada, speed cameras are just a tax on the peasants. You get a cash fine for speeding, but it doesn’t include demerits on your license (because it would be impossible to prove who was driving). This means that the richer you are, the less the rules apply for you. If money means little to you, you have a free pass to speed with impunity.
Speeding tickets IMO should be delivered in a way that gives the driver demerits, and the cash penalties should be reduced.
What about cash penalties proportional to the value of the car?
I assumed that would be part of the penalty already (even in the US).
In the UK you get automatic 3 points minimum on your licence for speeding (12 points results in a driving ban).
Finland is way ahead of y’all:
Also, the US is ridiculously adept in taxing peasants. Traffic cams are trivial when you’ve got asset forfeiture on your side!
Ah I see. In the UK you get points even if caught by camera. Some clever souls over here (including MP’s) have been caught trying to get their spouses/partners to take the points to dodge bans.
