Traffic Cameras Suck - or do they?

Ah. This thread seems like it could be retitled

“No way to implement traffic cameras successfully- says the only nation that finds it difficult”

Inaccurate because they are very successful at generating revenue, their entire intended purpose. The only axioms you need to understand about USA#1 are that money talks and bullshit walks. Literally every single other thing can be deduced from those rules.

They do.

We have a red light cam in my city on a left turn arrow that’s a complete scam. Once you make your turn onto a two lane road there’s a gas station with two driveways on your immediate left and on the right there’s a giant lot with a Walmart, Starbucks, 8-10 restaurants, AutoZone, 24-hour fitness, and maybe 20-25+ other businesses and the lot is always at least 75% full. If some dumbass ahead of you tries to turn left into the gas station’s first driveway there’s no room for any cars to clear the intersection behind him. I saw three cars get hung out to dry this way on Friday (all on the same red) and daydream of finding a way to destroy the system without getting caught. It’s hard to believe the road that serves these businesses is adequate or meets city codes and I’d absolutely love it if the city got sued and had to provide refunds to anyone who got fucked over. The cam has been there for at least 10 years and hasn’t caught me yet, but my MIL got popped for having her bumper in the crosswalk when the light turned red. Anyone itt arguing for red light cams needs to FO. Seriously rage inducing bullshit.

Lol wow that is bold even by USA#1 standards.

This thread is a pretty amazing example of the US vs. the functional world. Like everyone in functional countries feels like these traffic ticket cameras are great, function as designed, and keep driving safer.

Americans experience is of speed limits changing every 100 feet while navigating a hill with a hidden camera, and all the red light cameras are set to get you if your rear bumper doesn’t clear the intersection by like 0.000001 seconds. And they’re all in poor areas and speed trap towns.

So of course we hate them! But our Unstuckers from other countries probably think we’re exaggerating. Nope, our traffic cameras are exactly that fucked.

Yeah this is a legit perfect example of where you can have two correct yet opposite answers based on where you live.

Here’s a map of red light cams /speed cams in the greater NYC and Long Island Area:

Those are…. not poor areas. Some of those red light cameras are located in probably the top 5th percentile richest zip codes in the country.

This may be true. But I dont think we’ve established that yet. Not a lot of evidence itt about the US. Just a lot of anecdotes.
