Traffic Cameras Suck - or do they?

Speed limits have to account for the bottom quintile of drivers.

But that’s socialism!

But most people are terrible drivers, so I get your point.

Yeah, it’s this. I dont know how it is in other states, but in NY these are absolutely equalizers, and they’r enot just being put in “the hood.” They are all over Long Island in wealthy areas. There’s a huge class of people who would never normally get tickets, for unfair reasons, that get them now.

Which is why the real solution isn’t just speed cameras everywhere, but redesigning streets to make it so people don’t feel safe speeding.

I think the general idea of electronic surveillance is a useful one, but implementation can be sub-optimal. The placement of traffic cameras can be used to encourage people to change their behavior, so the question is: what kind of changes do we want to see in driving behavior?

Is there anyone ITT who opposes traffic cameras even if they could be demonstrated to save a significant number of lives?

Based on my experience, its not possible to make a street that deters people from speeding. In Toronto people zoom through all many of side streets full of obstacles including cyclists and children and dogs and elderly people. They just don’t give a shit.

All those things you mentioned are obstacles that drivers know can get out of their way. Narrow the streets, and put in immovable obstacles like speed bumps and bulb-outs and bollards and medians with planters, and drivers will reflexively slow down.

It’s absolutely possible, it’s just that cities don’t want to do it. Not in North America, anyway.

I would have more confidence if I didn’t watch cars zoom down my street with speed bumps, swerving to try to get “around” the speed bumps, zoom down narrow side streets with inches to spare on each side vs parked cars, etc. I am all for doing a bunch of things to make streets safer and more walkable but drivers are really obtuse about this stuff. It’ll take years of trying to shift driver culture to change the behavior.

We do. I’ve been done by one in NYC.

yeah, the ones around here are absolutely in the “more urban” areas.

There was some discussion on Baltimore Twitter a month or two ago about this issue - we’ve got over 100 speed/red light cameras in the city and they’re largely concentrated in the black neighborhoods. I’m not against them in principle, and I could care less about the speed traps in suburbia that nail you going from a 35 to a 55 or whatever, but they’re subject to the same institutional biases as everything else.

DC is crazy with their speed trap cameras. I think it’s South Dakota Ave that has one every other block, my favorite being one that is hidden behind a large tree at the bottom of a hill where the speed limit drops by 10mph.

Yes the rental company just pays the ticket plus charges you a convenience fee.

I got a missed toll one which was obviously wrong since it hit the toll before and the toll after with a automated device. I’ve appealed those before successfully. But the rental agency paying is an admission to agree to the citation, thus no longer can be disputed.

why do they have badges if they are retired?

I believe most departments allow cops who retire to either keep their badges or receive some type of memento badge.

The rental company just send me the ticket directly. I remember because the ticket implied that I owe the Queen of England.

You mean to tell me, they don’t need no stinking badges?

Did the ticket say if you didn’t pay you might become a guest of her majesty?

Did you pay it?

yeah i don’t need the Queen on my ass
