The War on Voting

not sure on validity of this.

I think it was still done by the GOP, so I’m not sure you can blame the Dems on this one. I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure the infrastructure still comes from the state.

I don’t understand how we can have a democracy. There are huge incentives to cheat at every level. Those in power will always rig the votes so they win.

Completely fine and normal

So that’s…

Normal Election: 1,200 residents per polling place
This Election: 22,340 residents per polling place
Louisville This Election: 767,000 residents per polling place

It is going to be 639 times harder to vote in Louisville this election than it normally is statewide. But if you have a problem with that, obviously the only acceptable way to express it is with your vote!

Always on defense. Infuriating.

KY is expecting a record turnout with the early voting + absentee + mail-in ballot numbers according to state officials. Dunno if that is fake news but they’ve never had vote by mail before so maybe not?

Kentucky has a Dem governor right? So what’s up with that?

I’m not sure what you’re asking exactly.

Sounds like it’s going just fine in Louisville but not in Lexington.

Not sold on this being a terrible model for in-person voting but I’ll wait until the AA turnout numbers come back.

Why the Dem governor doesn’t step in and fix this shit, I guess?

I mean okay that’s cool and maybe Kentucky is different but in FL and most other states, the governor has wide latitude to step in and do the job of lesser state officials if he feels they are fucking up.

Just within the last year I have seen our governors remove state attorneys from capital murder cases when they wouldn’t pursue the death penalty (Orange County) and even fire sheriffs because they were Democrats (that sheriff who went on MSNBC and went at the NRA after the Parkland MSD High School shooting) so it seems Kentucky’s governor could at the very least open up another polling place or three, no?

I mean, the lack of lines isn’t the only problem with having a single voting precinct in a major city. I don’t know much about Louisville, but if we did something similar in Baltimore and had all voting take place at the convention center I’m sure there wouldn’t be lines either. But that’s because 80% of the city would have to get on multiple bus lines in the middle of a pandemic so they can spend 3 hours of their day to get there and vote. Or, alternatively, drive there and pay 15 bucks to park in a garage downtown.

In normal circumstances this would absolutely destroy turnout, but maybe enough people voted by mail or early that it won’t be so bad.

Obviously the key to this working is letting people vote early and by mail. I’m not sure what a good analogue is for Baltimore though. Louisville and Baltimore (city) are the 29th and 30th largest cities in USA#1, respectively, but with Baltimore being distributed over a much smaller land area. Might have to include Baltimore County and/or Anne Arundel for a better comparison. Make the people in Severna Park come downtown instead of stopping into some posh country club precinct while black people stand in line downtown 8 hours.

Because the governor doesn’t run the county election authority.

Not sure what the back story is here.
