The War on Voting

Are we sure mail in voting helps Democrats? A good chunk of Boomers, even right leaning ones, are terrified of this thing and will just stay at home.

This right here. Don’t forget that by November the death toll will be significantly higher and going to the polls will be legit dangerous for people over 50. What we have to prevent is mail in voting for olds but not for the young. If they give mail in ballots to some people we need to make sure they go out to all people.

Narrator: by a vote of 5-4, it was declared constitutional.

I don’t think the Supreme Court will take, argue and decide the case by November, but won’t be shocked when it happens.

If it’s left as is, the ambiguity will probably be enough to suppress turnout among potential felon voters since they won’t wanna risk literal prison for casting a ballot ldo so still a win for the bad guys

It is a terrible decision other than the nominal result. Sending it back to the FLORIDA AG to implement ignores political reality.

In his decision Sunday, U.S. District Judge Robert Hinkle ruled that the procedures put in place by the law amounted to an “unconstitutional pay-to-vote system.” He said “the State can condition voting on payment of fines and restitution that a person is able to pay but cannot condition voting on payment of amounts a person is unable to pay or on payment of taxes, even those labeled fees or costs.”

So they’re going to quickly pass a law that requires all fines and restitution to be paid, and if you have any assets and have not liquidated them to repay the fines and restitution, you cannot vote. As a fun bonus, they can add a new $10,000 fine for having outstanding fines and restitution…

Great job, Judge Hinkle. Way to go, your honor. (Clinton appointee.)

I’ll allow for the slight chance that he’s trying to outfox them by waiting for them to do that to strike it down, leaving them out of time before November. We’ll call it 1 in 10,000, and I’m definitely a conspiratorial idiot for thinking that’s even possible.

All that said, when I see this thread bumped with a little notifications icon, I get very scared. Glad it was actually semi-good news this time.

Less than Covid-19 escaping a lab. Interesting. (This is a joke)

Here’s the ballgame

Abolish the court

I live in Texas and have been following this closely. It is going to be my greatest pleasure to make my final stand and pull lever for every Democrat in Texas. The mouth breathers, the senile, doesn’t matter. Republican power structure needs to be burned to the ground. Too bad I live in LOLTEXAS. God this state sucks.

Texas seems like the kind of place that is awesome if you’re a white dude with money and not awesome otherwise.

As a white dude with a contextually small amount of money I can confirm.

Who cares what they think? Lying about whether mail fraud increases or decreases voter fraud is an example of the type of now legal free speech that gives us all strong reasons to doubt free speech.

Social trust is a valuable commodity when you’re trying to have a functional country. Having it be normal behavior to just lie your ass off without any consequences at all, and then have a bunch of people believe you because of echo chambers that contain no dissent… you’re over-prioritizing a principle that probably seemed more important than it was in the late 1700’s.

I’m not suggesting I have any coherent answers either. I just know that this combination of brand new communications technologies that are the best vector for propaganda yet dreamed of by humans (and that’s saying something because we’ve had religion a long time), and we’re basically in this extremist position where you’re allowed to say whatever you want even when it’s just sky is green false.

This combination is absolutely incredible for confidence men and women to just absolutely run wild and to wield real power. There has never been a time to be a flim flam artist or a televangelist.

I don’t think it will go on like this, because I don’t think it can. We’ll either beat this as a species (I originally typed nation, but on further consideration it’s definitely a human species level problem) and come to some more reasonable way of dealing with the concept of truth or we’ll break apart because of our inability to live in a common reality. Because seriously you can’t do business with people who live in an alternate reality. Like a totally different reality. It’s fucking nuts.

Last fall, before people knew what a coronavirus was, Pennsylvania’s Republican state legislature passed a bill allowing vote-by-mail. Apparently, Republicans are now lagging behind in mail-in ballot requests, with voters citing that Trump doesn’t want them to vote by mail as a reason.

Trump must hate Brian Kemp right now. I got a postcard from Georgia’s Republican SOS, urging me to vote by mail for the primary.

A bunch of people voted for Obama but not Clinton… but if we FORCED them to vote, they’d surely pick her, right?
