The War on Voting

Imagine the SCOTUS instant smackdown if at some point gerrymandering becomes a net positive for Dems.

They absolutely should make CA and NY every bit as extreme. Tomorrow.

NY’s governor doesn’t even want to put a progressive judge on the state Supreme Court, there’s no way she’ll think for a second about gerrymandering.

Nice eh

Ohio peeps: what are y’all hearing on the ground about Prop 1? This reads like good news for the No side to me, but I’ve been burned before by reading too much into early voting turnout trends.

Nice subtle shade from the author:

"Issue 1 supporters meanwhile remain confident. Spokesman Spencer Gross insisted, “when Ohioans hear the facts about Issue 1, they strongly support it, because they want to protect our constitution against the very type of big money, out-of-state influence we have been seeing from the no side.”

Notably, right-wing Illinois billionaire Richard Uihlein has put more than $1 million behind the yes campaign."

Who apparently started the company Uline and is an heir to the Schlitz brewing empire.

I haven’t heard a single person even mention it.

After 2000, Florida made positive changes to its voting laws and procedures and, as far as I know, has had very few issues since then, except for occasional Republican voter fraud. But obviously Republicans find “problems” where none exist and pass new restrictions because they can, and we wind up with this:

I drove through a lot of western rural Ohio yesterday. There were a lot of “Protect our Constituion Vote Yes on Issue 1” signs.

Also my county is combining and moving a lot of voting locations. I don’t know if this is happening elsewhere? I’m not sure if it’s strategic, or just random noise because it’s going to be such a small turnout election. I live in a pretty rural, very red area.

For those not familiar, Ohio is having a special election next week to try to make it harder for future ballot measures both to make it on the ballot and to pass if they do make it on the ballot. They are trying to stop abortion, marijuana, etc from being addressed via ballot measure, even if the majority of voters want it. They are holding this special election now, to make it harder for an abortion ballot measure to pass that will be on the ballot this fall. It is a very blatant power grab.

Having abortion and marijuana be perpetual issues is good for Democrats.

I just read today how this effort to ostensibly protect the ballot from special interests funded by out of state billionaires is being bankrolled by…you guessed it…an out of state billionaire.

My voting precinct in Ohio was moved and combined with a bunch of others for this vote. My wife is currently there and said it’s packed. I voted early.

We’re in a rural, red area. But I don’t know if this is happening systemically/strategically and will be a nightmare in more populous, blue areas.

If its happening in Ohio, we can presume its both strategic and horribly evil

I didn’t know if it was just my area because expected voters are probably very low in this special election, as there aren’t many voters in higher turnout elections.

A presidential election, I can walk into my precinct and walk right to a machine, and there are only 2 at my precinct.

Missed this discussion earlier. Call me sweet summer child, but I think this is going to be a No (i.e., good result) pretty easily. When I voted this morning, I actually had to wait in line, which is something I don’t believe I experienced at the last presidential election. Turnout was slightly more women than men. And the ever-knowing yard sign counts seemed to be slightly more favorable than the Trump/Biden ratios. Of course, whenever I venture out of my Franklin County suburb, I start seeing more and more “Yes on Issue 1” signs, but still less common than, say, Trump or Jim Jordan. Overall, I think this is an issue that Democrats are unified on, and a meaningful number of Republicans are with them.

Side note: I really hate, hate, hate the gross feeling I have where I’m eyeing up other voters and mentally deciding which way they voted. Aaaaahhhh, 50-60yo white man with a blazer on, screw you for voting yes (I assume). Meanwhile, as a late 40s white man myself I’m desperately trying to give off a “I’m actually a good guy” vibe. I think I’ve lost my mind. Politics has broken me.

I’m sorry, who the fuck is wearing a blazer in this weather? I’m more concerned with that over how the guy is voting.

It was quite pleasant this morning! I was wearing a long-sleeve pullover.

I just hope all the voters in Cleveland and Akron are able to find their correct voting locations

It’s 81 degrees, this is madness.
