And the other prong of the approach - ridiculous penalties for anyone who accidentally votes when they aren’t eligible - especially in a democratic primary.

It’s so fitting (in an ironic sense, for the people that think I’m the worst human ever) that a minority will lead this country for the rest of time.

eta: not a reference here btw

I mean, based on that poll the Dems are trying to push through a minority position with their voting rights legislation.

Support is growing among Texas Republicans for a push to audit the results of the 2020 election in a state that former president Donald Trump won handily. But the proposal, introduced in the House earlier this month, would only re-examine votes in Texas’s largest counties, most of which went for President Biden.

The legislation, House Bill 241, calls for an independent third party appointed by the state’s top GOP officials to conduct a forensic audit of results in counties with more than 415,000 people. Of the 13 counties that meet that criteria, 10 voted for Biden last year.

Hummm that sounds suspicious… why wouldn’t we want to do a full state audit?

The legislator pushing it knows why

But while Toth said he would support a statewide effort, he also argued the undertaking would be too expensive and time-consuming. Asked if he would consider including some smaller counties, Toth replied, “What’s the point? I mean, all the small counties are red.”

Man, it’s a good thing that the Bush v. Gore decision explicitly says that it shouldn’t be used as a future precedent. Otherwise, SCOTUS might look like hypocrites when they imevitably end up overturning an election in a state where there is a targeted recount only of ballots in blue areas…

Gore really was a fucking moron (more accurately his lawyers) asking for recounts only in heavily blue counties. If he had just asked for a state wide recount he may have pulled it out. He obviously actually won.

Georgia starts the process to take over the election board in a heavy Democratic area

The State Election Board appointed a bipartisan panel Wednesday to investigate Fulton County’s elections management, a performance review sought by Republicans that could lead to a state takeover of the heavily Democratic county.

Fulton is the first county to undergo a performance review created by Georgia’s new voting law, passed by the state’s GOP majority in the Legislature after Democrat Joe Biden defeated Republican Donald Trump.

Fulton has a history of election problems, with long lines, slow results and administrative errors, but a state monitor last fall found no evidence of dishonesty or fraud.

After the review is completed, the State Election Board will have the power to replace Fulton’s election board with a temporary superintendent who would have authority over vote counting, polling places and staffing.

Now, it’s a felony offense to impersonate an election official and the law creates a vague standard for breaking it, a standard that depends on impressions. It criminalizes engaging in conduct that might seem like something an election official would do.

The vagueness is a feature. They need to be able to selectively enforce the law on political opponents.

District 6 snakes up to grab urban immigrants in west Dallas than then goes some 30 miles south to Ellis county, a rural county that has absolutely nothing in common with them. District 5 cuts the Hispanic east Dallas and then grabs Kaufman and goes further east, all rural. 30 is packing all the Democratic vote into one district. God knows what 33 is doing.

Supreme Court: this is fine, if you don’t like it magically elect better representatives in your gerrymandered districts.

John Roberts!

Texas goes back to being a solid red state with Democrats being packed into cities.

I think it’s actually good for Dems?

It’s like the Republicans drawing it know that TX is more blue, and are playing a “hold on” strategy rather than trying to pick up seats.

It’s not good for Democrats, but it’s better than the worst counterfactual where Republicans could maximize their potential seat gains. Outside of the partisanship it sucks that that there’s basically no competitive seats, so election days become pretty rote, but I guess that’s a secondary letdown based on the Republicans playing more defense.

ok, I guess by good I meant, “about as good as possible from a Republican-controlled process”
