The Television Streaming Thread: Part III

I’ll probably still try to watch more. I get what it’s doing but just nothing compelled me to continue. I haven’t given up on it yet.

Have you watched other Tim Robinson stuff? I wouldn’t expect anyone unfamiliar with him to enjoy the show, and I wouldn’t expect anyone who likes his other stuff to be anything less than fully on board with this. His characters exist in a world where everyone has quirky anxiety issues and they verbalize and act on them with no filters, which must seem very weird to anyone expecting any sense of normalcy. And lots of sketch comedy style jokes that must be appreciated in the moment. Feels like they’re missing punch lines if you’re expecting follow ups. I would definitely recommend someone watch through ITYSL before attempting a chair company watch.

I’m only aware of him through memes but the form of comedy in The Chair Company translates well without needing to know him, if you like absurdist comedy even a little. The main aspect is that this character has somehow made it into a powerful position while being this character. The 0-100 style specifically works because the rest of the show is shot so straight.

I don’t know if you saw The Good Lord Bird, but that show was stacked with top notch pitch perfect performances (it’s a crime Ethan Hawke wasn’t nominated for an Emmy). Then, about midway through, Rafael Casal shows up and is SO loud and out of balance with the rest of the performances. That’s kind of what Tim Robinson was in the two episodes I’ve seen so far and that kind of counterpoint in pitch/tone usually plays hilariously.

No, I haven’t watched the previous Tim Robinson shows. I may have seen an episode of his sketch show but that’s it.

Bored to death during the new episode 1, think I’m over the show.

Fwiw I am not a Tim Robinson fan. I thought he was the reason Friendship sucked. But I love The Chair Company. A unique pleasure.

The way I explain Tim Robinson humor to people is that its a lot of yelling and swearing in situations where it’s not really called for. You’d think it would get old but he finds ways to keep making it funny. The chair company finds new ways to make it funny.

Watched EP1 of the Chair Company. Was thoroughly unimpressed, but given the praise here soldiered on to EP2. Made it 10 minutes before concluding this is definitely not for me.

Lol you probably missed wazy Wayne’s.

I haven’t seen Tim Robinsons other stuff. I don’t find him particularly funny, but I do find The Chair Company to be very funny.

I saw the play last weekend, so I have been rewatching seasons 1-4 before I start 5.

ok hopefully you don’t get spoiled.

Thought the recent episode of pluribus is the least interesting one so far.

I would concur that if you haven’t seen ITYSL then you are going to have a tough time with TCC. Tim Robinson is very polarizing imo. Either you love him or hate him. It’s not surprising at all that the reviews here are either effusive praise or the opposite.

Or both. There are times where I love him and times that I hate him!

I think the sketches/setups can be very funny. Example: the tables sketch. But sometimes I just really cannot stomach him / his delivery.

I feel like I end up landing in the middle on Tim Robinson. His jokes/bits don’t have a high batting average with me, but when they do hit then they can absolutely make me double over laughing.

Maybe it’s just that my wife hates him with the fury of 1000 suns and if she even sees his face on the TV she starts yelling at me like she was in a TR skit. YOU KNOW I HATE HIM WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS TO ME

Yeah I think he’s a terrible actor and do not really like the way he is on screen but I’m still enjoying Chair Company. I was skeptical after the first episode or two.

He’s not a terrible actor as he can play the right pitch a lot. He just very intentionally over acts to get ‘on top’ of a scene for effect.

I had no idea who he was but this was my exact visceral reaction.
