The Television Streaming Thread: Part II - Hot Takes, Jags Fans, and Bert

I thought that way too at first with the hookers, as in look men need to get their rocks off and woman can look the other way. I even took her trainer jest as just faking stepping out, but even if it wasn’t I look it to mean kind of a one off discrete thing as a kind of understanding. But the quickness with which she makes a completely non-sensical justification of the situation of Cameron fucking Harper, which in my mind betrayed that she’s had to do a lot of these on the fly justifications, then immediately seduces Ethan and that combined with saying ‘don’t make yourself be the victim’ twice in the series means she’s seeing Cameron’s multiple infidelities as victimizing her and she’s doing what she can to take control back and to take a step back they’re at the point of fucking their supposed friend’s significant others.

I mean maybe it works for them and it seems to have done so in the series but it doesn’t seem healthy.

That scene killed me. “Do you know these gays? What are these gays doing? Wait, are you saying YOU’RE gay?”

overall, I thought the whole storyline between the couples was just bad writing. randomly telling someone you just met that you don’t actually like that you had a kid with your trainer when you admittedly have had bad relationships with other female friends seems quite over the top. Ethan lost all sexual attraction to Harper (lol what?) but then gets it back by sleeping with someone else? Huh?

I thought the actress had to walk a fine line and she pulled this off. Daphne is supposedly old hat to the trophy wife lifestyle and she’s roping Harper into what that lifestyle means, from her perspective. And that means letting your husband’s indiscretions go while finding a way to reclaim power. That’s countered with that Daphne doesn’t have a lot of girlfriends so she’s also simultaneously very needy to have someone to confide to.

Ethan lost all sexual attraction to Harper (lol what?) but then gets it back by sleeping with someone else? Huh?

It’s not very well explained why Ethan lost attraction to Harper herself long term. In the long term though his relationship with Cameron was one of being sexually out dominated and being abused by him so it made sense why he’d be shut down and conversely why he’d get his mojo back after being with Daphne, because he’s finally getting to sleep with someone who Cameron has, at least at the surface level, taken a liking too. Getting revenge of a kind.

But it doesn’t really explain Harper and Ethan’s relationship.

Watched first episode of White Lotus. Have no idea where this is all going to go, but :vince1:

The Jennifer Coolidge character is already amazing.

There is something really hard to articulate that’s dead on about Aubrey Plaza and her husband in this show. Millennials trying to be good people, who are educated and practical in their choice of partner but miserable in their relationship. Who place a lot of value in what they aren’t, because they’re rightly disgusted with people like Cameron, but aren’t honest with themselves about what they want. Like they both think promiscuity is uncouth but can’t deny their sexual desires. And don’t want to admit they care about being rich when they clearly do. There’s a ton of that in SF/LA/NYC.

I think it’s more likely than not that Harper and Cameron didn’t bang. My main reason has to do with how long Ethan was banging on the door before Harper let him in. It wasn’t that long and she was a little too put together for me to think that they were full on banging.

Also, it would seem like a bit out of character for Harper to lie when pressed that hard. Especially because at that point in time, she is probably thinking that Ethan isn’t attracted to her and that she needs to get out of the marriage anyway. So why lie? It really seems that based on her earlier conversation, she has more or less resigned herself to the fact that they’re going to be splitting up.

It also would seem like a gross over-reaction if she actually believed Ethan. Which I kind of think she does.

Also, if they were going to bang, it would seem they would do it in Cameron’s room. They know Daphne is getting a massage and they will be undisturbed. If they do it in Harper’s room, they run the risk of exactly what happened.

Above notwithstanding, they totally could have banged. I’m probably like 75/25 towards didn’t bang

You gotta spoiler that shit, man. Anyway, about that

I think the calling him an idiot was a tell that they did something, but not necessarily that they banged. Of course, it’s ambiguous and open to interpretation.

A very legit interpretation, is that they start the trip looking down at Cam and Daphne, but by the end, they become them. And if they really do become them, then they’re both unfaithful.

People just can’t handle Portia’s swag

Is no one watching Chainsaw Man? Seems like the best anime in a decade. That is my hot take.

Tanya: “Is Greg having an affair? I know you know” to Quentin as he has an endless stream of blood pouring out of his mouth was perfect, amazing writing

Yeah, that was pretty great.

Here another White Lotus question.

Between Harper and Daphne, is one of them supposed to be the clearly more attractive one for plot purposes. I think they are portrayed as more or less in the same league, and which one someone prefers is just a matter of taste. However, if one is supposed to be more attractive, that kind of changes how I view certain things.

Same question for Cameron and Ethan. I ran that one by Mme Melkerson. She was not particularly helpful, but more or less gave the same answer as above.

Does it slap or fuck? If not, do not want.

I think Daphne and Cameron are supposed to be more conventionally attractive than the other couple

definitely Cam and Daphne, not really even close to a competition in my mind

Daphne is a low key monster but it’s impossible to hate her. Based on some articles I’ve read about the actress it could definitely be a Jeremy Strong situation where they’re so good at the character because they are that person IRL.

this feels strong. she’s more like a fully realized version of season 1 Rachel. a product of her choices and now doing what’s needed to tolerate the emotional bear trap she voluntarily stepped into. not a victim but not exactly a villain either
