This is perfectly put. If you loved the show and like scratching a nostalgia itch, this will certainly do. But, yeah, you’re not missing much if you skip it.
The reviews are all very positive too, thanks.
Any opinions on Black Mirror?
Gotta do it in competition to count as a world record imo
New movies on Netflix in May (usual caveat that some have left before and are returning):
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is great for those who have not seen it
Completely forgot that film existed or that Fincher made it. We’ve somehow watched nearly every other Fincher film the last few months.
Unorthodox on Netflix is a brutal but ultimately cathartic and inspiring four-episode mini series about a teenage girl’s journey to escape an abusive Hasidic community and marriage in New York and find freedom in Germany.
Upload season one on Prime is superb. If you liked The Good Place, this is a perfect binge watch.
I have not seen it. One of those movies where the premise turned me off a little bit but I also think I always conflated it with Meet Joe Black.
Might give it a view.
For a movie I saw on demand, I do not recommend The Assistant. It has Julie Garner in it (Ruth from Ozark) but the movie is pointless and boring. Garner is in the entire movie and 70% of the time by herself. She is fine in it but again the movie is pointless.
Yeah, I was the same way going in. On paper it just doesn’t seem like it’s going to work. I’m not even sure it does work without Fincher’s capable hands guiding it, but it just does. It has a very Forrest Gump quality to it, not so much the character himself but the way he interacts with other characters and the world. See if you can spot a then almost completely-unknown Mahershala Ali in a small support role.
What’s wrong with MJB
I really liked her in Martha Marcy May Marlene with Elizabeth Olsen and John Hawkes.
She was great in a smaller role in Waco, too. I’m guessing she impressed them so much in production that Waco had something to do with her then being cast in Ozark.
I think Fincher’s direction, and also that Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett, and Julia Ormond () are irresistible actors. Mahershala Ali, too. Every performance brings an impossible premise to life.
I didn’t hate it, but I could easily cut an hour out of Meet Joe Black and not miss a beat
+1 to Benjamin Button being much better than you might expect and worth a watch.
What would you cut???
I performed the cafe scene for an acting class. So good.
Julie Garner is great in the Americans. Amazing show.
I don’t know man, I’d have to watch it again to get into specifics. The movie’s just too damned long. Some of the romantic scenes between Pitt and Forlani? I love Jeff Tambor but a lot of his lines could see the cutting room floor too as he’s mostly there for comic relief. And the subplot of Imma-sell-my-good-company-to-the-evil-conglomerate-and-retire-wait-no-I’m-not-they’re-evil-oops-I’ve-pissed-off-my-partners feels like it’s been done a hundred different times and ways now.
lololol
Is that real? I can’t tell what level it’s on.
That’s really from the movie lol.
This is the scene I performed in the class. Dang, brings back memories. I had a huge crush on the girl who performed the scene with me.
Then we jumped to this scene.
Which was a bit of a cheat since like y’all, no one else in class had seen the movie, so we knew we were giving them a very different impression of the romance story given that they assumed I was playing the same character in both scenes. They filled in a lot about what could have gone wrong.
Afterward, they did what all actors do and praised our performance by saying it was so believable that they thought we should actually date. I never did drag up the courage, but when I look back, I think the thing that sold the performance was when we mimed the end of that first coffee scene.
They’re pouring the coffee, mixing the sugar, the milk, and in the scene, Brad Pitt deliberately matches her movements as she makes them. The care that went into us recreating that same synchronization for a live performance made them wonder what else we could synchronize.
First time I saw her was in an arc on The Americans. She has been good in everything I have seen her in, the movie itself just was not good.
Can’t argue with that. I have not heard of it. And now I will be glad to skip it…
I burst out laughing.
