I thought the first half was pretty shitty. Seemed like he was just trying to offend people for the sake of offending people. The whole I’m a victim blamer thing was more cringey than funny.
But the second half, especially last 20 minutes or so, was gold. I guess you gotta be willing to sit through the Michael Jackson shit to see him bring it all together at the end.
I mean none of his Netflix stuff is as good as his pre-Netflix days. I’ve watched For What It’s Worth and Killing Them Softly multiple times. I have not watched any of his Netflix material more than once. Whether I watch Sticks & Stones again remains to be seen.
Let’s say Dave never did his classic “How Old is 15, Really?” bit back in the day and it showed up in one of his new specials. Would we see a bunch of articles loudly proclaiming “DAVE CHAPPELLE ATTACKS RAPE VICTIM ELIZABETH SMART!!!”? We would! Dave’s always been like this, man. And of course an old school standup comic like him hates hates hates the current culture of not being able to make jokes about certain things or trying to stir up outrage over this or that. All standups are like that. Exactly because they’re necessarily on the edge of stuff you can’t say – that’s their whole job, to twist the profane into something funny and if it’s really good, profound. Which is exactly what How Old is Fifteen, Really does.
People who are offended by what Chappelle jokes about aren’t fans of his. Nobody used to be a fan of Chappelle then all of a sudden got offended and aren’t. Those pricks were never fans of his. They just want a reason to be outraged on Twitter.
Fans of well-known comedians know what they’re getting when they buy tickets. When I bought a ticket to see Doug Stanhope, I knew jokes about gang rape in India were not out of the question. When he told them, myself and the thousands in attendance laughed a ton. When I saw Frankie Boyle, I’d leave disappointed if he didn’t make jokes about Madeleine McCann. He did and everybody in the crowd laughed.
Maybe that’s why Burr’s latest special was recorded in London. Crowds there might not be quite as dug into the PC culture and being offended for the sake of others like in America.
I may have them confused I’ll look and see if I can find it. People were really angry over that joke at the time I remember all the hubbub edit yes you are correct it was over a tsunami tweet
Watching the super secret Chappelle epilogue that appears after his special if you don’t immediately turn it off, pretty good imo. After being asked about politics:
You know who I’m going to vote for if things keep going the way they’re going, that gay dude (long pause, someone yells Buttigieg)…No, Mike Pence
Just finished season 3 of The Hanmaid’s Tale and really enjoyed it. Full disclosure, I hated the first 2 seasons largely bc it felt like they were (poorly) masquerading cruelty as entertainment. There felt like less of that this season and more dramatic tension related to the character’s choices in this world with pretty well-defined boundaries.
There are certainly plot holes for sure, but a reasonable follow up and worth the watch.
