The Television Streaming Thread: Now With Felonies

How about this week’s episode?

Gas tank is dry as the Sahara

3 eps into a new Korean series on Netflix called Squid Game. Basically, people on the margins of society are asked if they’d like to play games for money. It’s very good so far. I have a feeling it will be very popular on this forum.

Haven’t seen it yet

I do know the episode order got expanded from 10 to 12-- so a couple of the episodes this season are stand-alones that don’t advance the plot. The Christmas one was the first one, and from what I know of this one it’s likely the second one.

Just realized Snowfall is based off freeway rick ross, the real one not the shitty rapper. His story is wild as fuck.

Looks like there is a movie Kill the messenger partly about the real rick ross that our main man Michael K. Williams aka omar played him in.

Couldn’t stop watching and already finished the 9 episodes in 2 days, which is rare for me. 9/10, definitely worth a watch

Into the night any good?

Yeah, I’m digging Squid Game as well.

Confirmed that this was one of the expanded-order episodes. Anyway I still don’t think the show is running out of gas, although this was certainly an odd one. It was fine but it comes at a weird time to leave so much from last episode hanging. Felt like an After Hours homage, but I’m still not sure how it really fits into the greater series or tells us anything new about Beard. Anyway, there are three episodes left, and I really liked a lot of the stuff from 8, so I’m hoping for a strong finish.

Just finished episode 1. Not sure how I feel about it yet.

Finally powered through the final season of Brooklyn Nine Nine. One final two-episode heist for the ending was the right way to finish.

Slightly different feel to it than Pui Pui Molcar

Bo Burnham got robbed at the Emmys. Admittedly, I have not seen Hamilton, but come on, it was already a Broadway show and now they just filmed it. I know I’m over-simplifying, but dude, Burnham’s special was one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen.

Burnham > Chappelle > Hamilton and then whatever. Some West Wing special was nominated, as was the Friends reunion. The latter was fun, but nowhere in the same universe as Burnham and Chappelle (and probably Hamilton).

EDIT: I normally couldn’t care less about these things, but I was curious if he would win and I happened to turn on the TV right when his face was on the screen.

I love Burnham but didn’t think his new special was that great. Well at least not that funny.

What did you love about it so much? That he showed more of his depression? Any particular songs you liked? Welcome to the internet slaps, but thats really the only one I liked.

I really liked the first episode.

Fuck the Emmys. Zero wins for The Wire, ever, for anything. Tells you all you need to know.

Succession is the best show in TV, airball? But like 5 for SNL, which is objectively terrible. GJGE

succession’s last season was 2019

Whoops, my bad! Emmys still suck

This might belong in the baseball thread, but I watched the 4-part 30 for 30 episode on the 1986 NY Mets (Once Upon a Time in Queens). Cliffs:

  • At 4 hours, it’s way too long.
  • Lenny Dykstra legitimately seems severely brain damaged. Strawberry and Gooden seem like they’ve probably been affected by drug use, as well. But Dykstra is at another level.
  • Mookie Wilson seems like he’d be an awesome hang.
  • It made me like Ray Knight and Keith Hernandez more.
  • Jeff Pearlman gets a lot of screen time if you like him. (I do, but I’m biased since are both former Blue Hens.) But other rando non-athletes (e.g., Baba Booey) get a lot of screen time, too, which contributes to the 4 hours being too long.
  • Davey Johnson has enormous teeth.
  • Lee Mazzilli is the real-life version of John Travolta’s character in “Saturday Night Fever”.

Ultimately, I was able to plow through the entire 4-episode run because I am in the prime demographic for it - I was a baseball fan in middle school in New Jersey when all of this was happening. So all of those names triggered a big nostalgia rush even if I wasn’t a Mets fan. (The big ones like Gooden and Strawberry, but also the lesser guys like Kevin Mitchell, Jesse Orosco, and Ron Darling. And Mike Scott scuffing balls - that was fun.) But it wasn’t worth anywhere close to 4 hours of my time.

To be fair the sketch category had a whopping 2! nominees so it was essentially a “Lets give Lorne another emmy since the show can no longer win a traditional category” category.
