There’s a thing about Jimi learning guitar himself but other people say he got a lot of lessons from many different people playing with/around him during his growth.
Summer of Soul was great btw. Recommend.
You’ve never met anyone who could play by ear?
Yeah, after years and years of practice. The idea someone just picks it up and starts jamming is pretty lol.
Like, researching Paul’s dad and grandpa a bit and they were both musicians in bands of reasonable popularity, played multiple instruments and one was playing rag time. Paul got more than rudimentary training imo.
I’ve known several people who learned how to play the piano without taking lessons. They taught themselves how to play popular songs without learning how to read music.
Well, learning songs and improvising are different things also. They never watched any videos on Youtube or anything? Just hammered out keys until they found the right notes and timing? Or do you mean they never took formal lessons?
Yeah, I can read sheet music because I took years of piano but for guitar I find tablature so much easier. Especially since I mostly play rhythm
I can’t read tab and have never played a string instrument. My neighbor borrowed me a guitar but I just keep playing drums or synths. I’ve really been meaning to get a grasp of strings though at least a minimal understanding.
The people I am talking about are generally too old to have learned on Youtube. I have no idea how they learned. I assume part of it was watching other people playing piano and copying what they saw. Then, they somehow just figured out how to do a reasonable reproduction of anything they hear. But I ask them and they don’t know how to read sheet music.
Imagine someone growing up on a farm where there is a piano in the house, more as a decoration to convey status than something for regular use, but no one to teach and they mess around on the piano while occasionally watching who can play. Someone like that.
That’s almost exactly how I learned piano but we also had all the books of sheet music my relatives played and I learned to read those almost immediately. Good on your friends though. That’s cool.
I have some friends that are in a band that added a classically trained college kid to their band and he couldn’t improvise. I suspect your friends can improvise in a key better but wouldn’t have a clue how to play some Beethoven or something. Not saying I can play beethoven on piano either lol. I was good enough to pass a proficiency test in 2005 and have barely played since.
Jabonator comes to mind and he’s awesome but he’s using sheet music in some covers.
Did you learn to play drums from sheet music?
Stick Control is the basic book beginners get but can go so so deep. There are several famous drum fills on the first two pages of those single beat combinations. Then, you can practice sight reading by assigning R and L to different drums while playing ostinatos, etc. but it’s basically sheet music.
ETA: I also played marimba with 4 mallets and vibraphone with 4 mallets reading sheet music in college. I want a vibraphone so bad but not bad enough to spend $3k+.
White Lotus is so good.
If you guys haven’t watched the McCartney documentary, he shows how he teaches kids 8 basic chords without sheet music and says you can make a song with those chords.
He also talks about how creating music is supposed to be fun and that if the sound engineers didn’t notice an error, they didn’t say anything. And a lot of the songs were made in less than a day.
Watched the first episode of Fleabag. Does she always do the talking to the camera thing because I’m not sure I can handle that much more.
Yes
Yes but keep watching cuz the show is awesome and I’m in love with her
