I’m currently halfway through the full run of The Leftovers, an HBO show from the mid 2010s. Season 1 was ok, I’d have insta quit when I saw Lindelof’s name on the show but while the first season gets ok ratings on Metacritic, the second season gets good ratings and the third season gets ratings much like those of pure cocaine. So I sat through the first season. It wasn’t good, but it wasn’t the worst thing ever either.
Now I’m halfway through the second season and it’s the purest fucking drivel. Anyone seen this? Is it going to get any better? I’m borderline plot committed but considering dumping it. I’m worried the high ratings for the later season are because the only people who kept watching are the sort of people who think pretentiousness and slow motion montages of people looking sad to music constitute high art.
uhhhhh if you made it this far watch the rest. You are right, its a ridiculous show and like you I had to struggle through it a couple times but its high points (s2e8 INTERNATIONAL ASSASSIN) more than make up for its lost-ey garbage but unlike lost its not really written by the seat of lindelof’s pants and yeah 3 seasons is about right.
I was watching an old episode of Coach last night. The actress that played Tony Soprano’s mom was on it. She played Judy Watkins neurotic mother with a poodle. It’s one of funniest episodes of the show.
If you’re looking for all your narrative questions answered, it’s going to leave you cold. It’s more of a meditation / exploration on grief with some great performances.
I liked the final season and the series finale. Think it’s in the high 90s on metacritic
I’ve been rewatching Girls lately. Such a great show, just so many times I have to actually pause and laugh hysterically. I’m sure many of you guys missed it because of its apparent demographic, but it really does have broad appeal. And the acting is great, Adam Driver and Lena Dunham are terrific. And it’s one of those shows that improves on repeat viewing. Can’t recommend highly enough.
What the hell did Lena do? I don’t agree with her HRC centric type politics but her show constantly satirically pokes fun at that sort of politics and at herself in particular, so I’ve got a lot of respect for what she accomplished with Girls.
After a Black woman accused one of her writers of rape she defended him and tried to gaslight her. Also the stuff in her memoir about molesting her sister when they were children.
Beyond that, just generally saying stupid, narcissistic, occasionally racist stuff.
I tried Girls and did not enjoy it because I hated everybody, spoiled self-absorbed children with no real problems other than the petty interpersonal ones they created themselves.
