The Television Streaming Thread: Now With Felonies

huh? da 5 bloods was the original team of theirs in Nam, the 4 plus the one that died there

Basically the treatment of every non-black character.

Like I completely understand that Spike Lee wanted to show the story of black Vietnam vets, and he did that very well. But the rest of the story and characters were super lazy. Every European character was a stereotype. And the Vietnamese characters were all over the place. The kid in the bar begs for money from people just so he can throw fireworks at them later? And another one trying to aggressively sell a whole feathered chicken to an obvious tourist on a boat? What?

It’s like Spike Lee went out of his way to carefully humanize all the black characters in a way that transcends previous stereotypes Then just plows ahead with absurd stereotypes of every other character in the same way that many movies portray black people.

Summary

I wouldn’t be surprised if was exactly that.

To be fair, the black characters are also portrayed in a super odd way.

Strangely enough, outside of Goodfellas, I also can’t get into mob movies

Is the Invitation the one about the man and his girlfriend being invited to his ex’s Hollywood Hills home for a party? Because I would throw that into the horror pile as well

Yeah. And you are right on that.

Part 2 of the year in TV

You might be the first person to give Animaniacs (2020) a positive review.

It’s in order, coming out in parts every day this week until we get to the top 6 on Friday.

It’s going to have more comedies than dramas because that’s what I watch more of-- in part because, and I could go on at length about this, I think Prestige TV has codified a certain model and aesthetic that TV dramas often imitate without having the backbone of a good story.

I was thinking the same thing about Moonbase 8

It’s funny-- my favorite TV drama is The Shield, and it looks nothing like its peers of the time or any of the Prestige TV Flavored Product that’s come out since. But the style works with the show, and more importantly, it’s dramatically driven in a way a lot of shows aren’t-- where there’s an actual single arc and a series of action-consequence-reaction that drives the story. It’s driven by character actions, rather than symbolism or the writers wanting to make points or establish a cool visual aesthetic or whatever.

A lot of Prestige TV nowadays is more interested in being like literature, where everything is detailed and highbrow-looking and capital-A artistic, where it creates a mood more than tells a story-- and often, even when it does have a story to tell, it deliberately paces that story slower than it should be organically. But drama is powerful because it moves at the speed of life, because it’s centered on the characters’ actions and how they make their own fates, and that is what really makes us feel its power and makes it move us. Most Prestige TV seems designed to primarily make the viewer feel smart and cultured for watching it.

[A]ny set of rules you can string together to define a prestige TV series is designed to signal one thing: That the show is meant to be taken seriously. Its characters are very serious people doing serious work. Its structure mimics novels and movies (apparently more serious artistic media) as closely as possible. And, most importantly, it invites viewers to pore over every frame in all of the very serious ways viewers have available—recaps, pages of theorizing about the hidden significance of minor production design choices, and, always, hunting for clues.

There has to be some element that does genuinely engage audiences, but a lot of the parts of prestige TV are eminently for sale. It’s never been easier to manufacture “quality,” simply because the ingredients—high production values, decently well-known actors, a slight degree of directorial flourish—are in such high supply.

I really thought Space Force would be the show to get this reaction.

Eh I almost thought that but I remember some midling reviews of space force.

I tried to watch it but couldn’t get into it. But this is standard for me. 90% of all series I start take me a many many tries to get into.

I probably saw the first episode of Dexter and Breaking Bad ten times each before seeing episode two.

Space force was… fine. With the cast they have it should have been better than fine. I blame Carell’s decision to use whatever shitty accent he was using
