The Television Streaming Thread: Now With Felonies

The 8 year old in me is a sucker for a ladder/loft bed. The 6’4" guy in me is not. But honestly, it’d be fun for a while.

Just think of how much fun it would be to kick someone out of bed

I was scrolling through HBO Max and saw that, appropriately, they have the 1970’s Wonder Woman TV show on there. I remember liking it when I was a kid (re-runs in the 80’s), so I showed a little bit to my own spawn. The intro is the GOAT.

I just rewatched Breaking Bad and the last season, especially the last 3-4 episodes, is peak TV. Just perfect.

What did you think about the Nazi-killing robot twist?

Penultimate episode is top 3 all time.

Siggggh, second ep of The Stand is out

What the fuck? How come nobody can do a Lincoln Tunnel scene? I appreciate what they tried to do with the sewer escape, but it just made me want the Lincoln Tunnel more. Two adaptations in a row without even an attempt at the Tunnel.

Fuck.

Thank goodness just seeing the word spoiler triggers my mental failsafe. Now that I’m conscious again, correct thy spoiler tags at once you fiend.

What the hell? I pushed the stupid blur spoiler button

Crisis averted. Standing down.

Barrie’s heroine, Wendy (played by Devin France), [is] the lead character. Unlike so many of her counterparts, this Wendy, the brash daughter of a New Orleans diner owner, doesn’t exist simply to follow her idol, Peter, around. Afraid to grow up and have to grind life out as her mother does, she decides one day to hop on a train with her twin brothers, Douglas (Gage Naquin) and James (Gavin Naquin). They end up in an island world where kids, headed up by the extroverted Peter (Yashua Mack), run around, have adventures, and indeed never age.

Welcome to what I would describe as the Terrence Malick version of Peter Pan. A bold, gritty, contemporary reimagining always willing to flirt with the edge of possibility. Loved the “do you believe in fairies” reinvention. An ending that will send you to tears.

A lot of reviewers found significant fault with the movie, saying the flaws follow through on the problematic representations of race and poverty the director showed in the nevertheless much-celebrated Beasts of the Southern Wild.

David Simms from The Atlantic gave my favorite quote for the movie LOL:

The effort it must have taken to create this movie is apparent in every frame, but that doesn’t mean it’s watchable.

Simms later says the film is flawed because it tells a visceral story that requires you to experience the characters as archetypes, and that indeed seems deliberate. The film is not failing at being the things the critics have found fault with–it wasn’t trying to be those things in the first place. Is a film flawed for not attempting to be those things? Perhaps, but that’s a different conversation than one that takes the film on its own terms.

The audience ratio shows viewers overwhelmingly liked the movie. I’ll have to think more deeply about it. Taken just as a visceral experience, I found the movie to be moving and worth recommending.

Now streaming on HBO Max.

“Trump’s words are so empty, whereas with Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, I feel like they say what they mean and mean what they say. So I don’t think that there’s a lot that I can do there,” she said. “But I am kind of itching to do Boris Johnson”—the U.K.’s Trumpian prime minister.

And with the special in her rearview, she’s concentrating on her upcoming CBS sitcom, an adaptation of her book How to Be Successful Without Hurting Men’s Feelings. The show will focus on the sexism in the workplace, following three women at different stages in their careers and exploring how each of them deal with those uncomfortable moments.

I really loved Beasts of the Southern Wild, but I tend to agree with critics over audiences, but the trailer looks amazing… I’m so torn.

Give it a shot. I’d love your perspective. I’m still trying to make sense of my own.

It might help that it’s been so long since I’ve seen a version of Peter Pan that I only remember the vaguest outline of the story.

Mr. Bean is some good holiday viewing. My 5-year-old approves. It’s on Prime.

heh, this reminds me, Hulu acquired Blackadder recently.

I don’t think I’ve watched every season of that.

You need to get on that. I think the 3rd and 4th seasons are the best.
