The Television Streaming Thread: Now With Felonies

$100 bet that it doesn’t get above 6.5 on imdb 2 months after its last episode?

I’m not sure if you’ve forgotten that I’m a lot more likely to like something with a low score. Maybe we could reverse who is taking which side?

Yeah low hanging fruit I know, I know, I’m the worst.

Indeed, and the more you dislike superhero movies the better the show works. Which is kind of weird as it also sort of works as a straight superhero show! Sort of how if you’re totally irony-deaf, Starship Troopers is actually a decent dumb action movie apart from being a satirical masterpiece.

The challenger: the final flight series on netflix is really good.

LET’S MFKIN GO

Just started it and fuck all of you West Wing haters, I instantly remember how much I loved this show in the original run.

The unobtrusive naturalism of Sorkin’s series can sometimes war with his preference for text over subtext and love of speechifying. But the theatricality of this special staging, the suggestive spareness of the decor — door frames give the actors something to “walk and talk” through — along with the ornate empty theater and the pinpoint lighting give the performance a ceremonial feeling that supports such a direct approach and a ritual energy suitable to the subject. It’s summed up by C.J.'s declaration that “freedom is the glory of God, that democracy is its birthright and that our vote matters.” If your budget encompasses Netflix, where the series is currently airing, as well as on HBO Max, watching the original and the restaging back to back makes an instructive comparison.

Eta 1: most impressive aspect is the staging and camera movement, makes me eager to see something similar for A Few Good Men

Eta 2: MFKIN ROB LOWE :heart_eyes::heart_eyes:

Dule Hill and Elizabeth Moss alone make this worth it. But also Rob Lowe. Also wtf Martin Sheen is 80.

Lin-Manuel Miranda cameo too?! This is the greatest episode of television ever produced on stage as a play.

RiskyFlush is clearly a cat who can see the whole board…

Anybody watching Lovecraft Country? I’m interested in takes

I did laugh at this line

It’s just a joke that he could die without it. In many ways, Jerry’s contentedness with his middling life in Pawnee made him the face of the ordinary townspeople in the office, and the show just couldn’t resist humiliating that, despite consistently being shown as a good person. That the writers’ solution to this was to give him a hot wife and a huge dick is hardly an excuse for workplace bullying.

This really seemed like how characters become more zany over time and jokes become more outlandish. The initial jokes were pretty comical because they were low key. Jerry was a bumbling oaf and the characters resented him for that, like everyone does the bumbling oaf in the office, but he was a good person. Then they ramped up the low key jokes to what the article is talking about into sadistic tortures that felt really out of place with the tone of the rest of the show and basic common sense, just to get a joke.

Saw the first episode and loved it but then checked out the book and holy moses is this a good book, so I decided to finish reading it before watching the rest of the show.

I have a strong suspicion which way this vote will go, but I’m posing the question anyway. Which series do I start next (I’ve never seen either.)

  • Succession
  • The Sopranos

Sopranos is the greatest show OAT but Succession is the greatest show on right now. Can’t go wrong with either but the timeliness of Succession easily put it over the top for me.

Like you I missed out on The Sopranos the first time around - I was contracting and working crazy hours.

When mrs j was looking after her sick mother a couple of years ago I needed something to take my mind off things and watched all 80+ episodes over a few weeks - it’s fantastic and addictive.

This is a good point and definitely something to consider.

Either way Succession is the clear answer. If you want to watch something over a few weeks watch Succession. If you want to watch something over a few months? Watch Succession and then Sopranos!
