Yeah I started watching Good Place from it’s pilot. Extremely rare for me to do that. Which just made the s1 finale that much more special.
I have watched both of these shows and can confirm they are both unbelievably good. They have a unique vibe and it is a mystery to me they are so unkown
I guess it’s hard to draw people in when a show is based on slowly and methodically layering absurdity on absurdity to deliver pitch black comedy with humanism and pathos.
I watched season one of The Good Place and it failed to draw me in, yet everyone raves about it.
What am I doing wrong?
Eh. The love is mostly because its clever and everyone loves Dansen and Bell and Mike Schur shows. Its not top tier TV but its certainly not bad.
Another one of my unpopular opinions is that The Good Place gets worse every season it’s on the air
As a lifelong fan of The Twilight Zone, it pains me to say this, but season 4 was absolute garbage. There are maybe 2-3 good episodes carried by incredible actors, but the rest are just half-hour shows stretched out to fill an hour. It’s not Rod Serling’s fault, he objected to the 1-hour format that the network imposed on him.
I feel like sci-fi works best as either short stories or epic space sagas. Trying to do a one-hour, self contained sci-fi show is tough. I guess Black Mirror managed to pull it off.
As much as I just praised S1…I agree…
but I still enjoyed the ride…and glad it didn’t drag on longer than it did. But it probably could have been done in 3 seasons.
And even the brilliant idea behind the first season is really a ripoff of Sartre’s No Exit
It’s not a rip off, it’s a knowing homage. The whole series is about philosophy. It’s the ultimate example of hiding fiber is a sugary breakfast cereal. The series also has a near perfect end which is very rare.
This kind of feels like splitting hairs. When is an adaptation or remake “valid” as art and when is it just a retread?
The entire show is framed as an introduction to global philosophy. If there was ever an homage, this is it. It’s not some random show cribbing a little bit of Satre because the writer is lazy.
It’s only a rip-off if it’s bad. Otherwise it’s an homage or inspired by.
I too was exhausted by the nineteenth remake of No Exit
And the subsequent seasons confirmed it as a lack of original ideas rather than a brilliant twist on an old premise.
I agree. Overall, it’s fantastic, but it felt forced the last season or two.
Did you like the end?
It was interesting. I’m not one of those people who was like, 'OMG WHAT A PERFECT ENDING!"
I’m someone who doesn’t understand why anyone would want to literally end their existence because it’s boring being in heaven for eternity. Yeah, sure, it’s so sweet that they become part of the universe or some shit, but damn, I’d rather be bored in heaven than cease to exist for the rest of time.
That said, I get it. It was an elegant, touching way to end the show. I appreciate that it got me thinking.
3.5 / 100 here, sounds like this is the smartest place on the internet about The Good Place
I’ll conclude with something (not by me) that elaborates some more on the problems I had with the show (and with the later seasons of Parks and Rec as well): The Curious Worldview of Michael Schur's Television
