Watched The Morning Show on Apple and would recommend if you have access to the free preview. It’s about the cast of a Good Morning America type show caught in the middle of a significant #metoo scandal. The show covers the scrambling of executives, on-air personalities, and the show’s staff all trying to avoid the piano falling on them in the aftermath.
Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon got a lot of attention during awards season for their work in this and they were right to be noticed. Especially Aniston who at first just seemed like she was doing a version of Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada. But as the episodes progressed, her performance was shown to be quite nuanced and much more than a copy of any one character. A shout out also to Martin Short who has a small role but is amazing.
Another good thing worth noting is the gratuitous lifestyle porn which is as good as anything on TV. Think Big Little Lies but in NYC. And with more money. And better taste.
The show’s negative, and it’s a big one imo, is how they TWICE spoiled their own episodes with warnings at the start of the show. “If you’re having trouble controlling your gambling call 1-800…” at the top kinda gives away where this is going. Another miss was the chance to take the #metoo conversation in a different direction. The questions about power and manipulation and choice and agency are all really well laid out and presented so an important conversation about these things were available. They seemed to chicken out tho. That’s not to say where it ended up was bad, but different than where it could have gone, and probably worse off for it.
I’ve enjoyed the first three episodes of Space Force. It’s like a much lighter Veep. Maybe Veep meets the Office. My only complaint is Steve Carell doing a weird Batman voice for some reason.
I mildly enjoyed space force, but I feel like carell wasn’t a good casting choice. The character is an uptight lifelong military general but steve carell has a softness that he brings that takes me out of the show.
One of those rare days where I am totally caught up with work and a new book I’m writing. What to do??? THE LAST DANCE baby!!! Except it is not available anywhere, even through the secret links a friend provided to me
Looks like it will be this Oscar nominated film instead.
Just started by first watch through of Dark. Elite AF.
I remember I didn’t bother watching it because a bunch of people said it was Stranger thing but German and that didn’t sound interesting at all. What a stupid fucking comparison that was lol.
I watched this last night. Written and direct by Chinonye Chukwu, the first Black woman to win the U.S. Dramatic Grand Jury Prize at Sundance. Her previous film Alaska-Land was rejected from every festival and lab she applied to. What a terrific achievement.
Fantastic performances. It’s got Wendell Pierce, Aldis Hodge, Richard Schiff, Danielle Brooks (from Orange is the New Black), Dennis Haskins (Principle Belding from Saved by the Bell).
A dark story about the warden who oversees death row. Aldis Hodge plays her next scheduled-to-die inmate, and though she believes he might be innocent, she is powerless as the plot reveals whether he will receive clemency.
Shoot. It got 6% on Rotten Tomatoes, though 60% audience, so I figured I’ll be in the minority who like this one. Also has a cool non-binary character I’m pleased to say isn’t the first person to die.
Nathan For You is 6 bags on the rewatch. LEGENDARY TV SHOW MUST WATCH
I booked us adjoining hotel rooms for us to spend the night. So once inside, I switched the traditional handcuffs for some custom ones I had made with an extra-long chain so we’d be able to have our own space while I can be sure he wouldn’t run off in the middle of the night.
It was a little uncomfortable at first, but after we each negotiated a fair amount of slack, I was able to go to bed knowing that Michael Richards and my Holocaust money wasn’t going anywhere.
I anonymously hired someone off Craigslist to go to a local Walgreens and told him there would be cash hidden in a dirty McDonald’s cup outside the location which he was to use to buy up the store’s entire supply of prepaid cell phones.
The Craigslist guy was told to then bring the phones to an abandoned pier at the San Pedro harbor at exactly 1:15PM, where he would find a pouch hidden inside a white first aid kit at the end of the dock. He was then instructed to put all the phones into the pouch, hook the base of the pouch to a nearby cinder block, and throw it off the pier, where unbeknownst to him, I was awaiting the delivery in full scuba gear beneath the surface. Completing the final step of a burner phone purchase that would be impossible to track back to either me or Andy.
Nathan for you and Review being on back to back is an untouched comedy hour.
Pancakes, Divorce, Pancakes might be the best episode of a comedy of late.
