I catch stuff the fourth and fifth time through Mad Men episodes. The writing is truly incredible and the dialogue is unlike any other TV show I’ve ever seen. It also demands a lot of the audience - you need to pay a ton of attention and have knowledge of all previous episodes to get what’s going on.
Come to think of it, @anon10396289, I wonder if one reason Upload didn’t work for me (besides the tone stuff) is that I just didn’t really particularly care about or connect to any of the characters. The scene at the end with Nora and Nathan was nice, but other than that, the only person I was really interested in was Luke, the guy who shows Nathan how to glitch the afterlife to get free breakfast after the buffet closes.
Watched the first episode of Motherland: Salem and I still ify on it. I like any B level entertainment and think a lot of them are more enjoyable to cinematic TV, but I didn’t understand the world building very well. There’s a terrorist witch group that I guess is like Al Qaeda, but the good witches get conscripted into the Army and talk about dying all the time, which makes it sound like they’re in a full pitched WW II like war, not hunting some terrorist group that’s hidden and striking every once and a while.
Also how many witches are there? How does American history relate to the idea that there are super powerful beings? Apparently they’re integrated into society but what are the implications of that? I
Nathan is definitely the weak link in the show. Kind of the point of his character is that he’s a bland, shallow pretty boy but that’s a dangerous game because if you make the main character bland, banal and boring then what the heck are we even watching for.
Took me a couple more episodes than that but by the end, I had it rated with The Wire as my favorite TV of all time.
Have been mostly lurking this thread for a while but for me it is
The Wire
Sopranos
Mad Men
Breaking Bad
Dark
In that order. Dark is probably the tightest written sci-fi/thriller type show ever that actually mostly makes sense and has lot of mindbending moments. It’s what Lost aspired to be frankly. If you haven’t watched it I highly recommend it.
My list is
Breaking Bad
The Wire
West Wing
Fleabag
The Shield
Freaks and Geeks
Six Feet Under
This reminds me of Trump claiming he was joking about the bleach and alcohol recommendations after the fact.
Basically, you know after the first episode whether you should be allowed to procreate or not.
Only when Don (or Peggy to a certain extent) is in the room. He transcends it.
Wiener thinks ~everyone else in the world is lamentable at best.
Women in Don’s world are only interesting as foils for him. Same with men, actually.
Roger shooting the shit is more interesting “action” than other great shows’ “action”. Yes, I’m aware you’re using “action” to suggest stuff which furthers the sequential plot.
Duck might as well be saying “good luck to all the other prestige tv shows”
Lol
Small Wonder
Gummy Bears
Murder, She Wrote
My Two Dads starring Dick Butkus
the old black-and-white Superman show
Challenge of the GoBots
Pulp Fiction episode of Community was pretty pretty good
Are we just listing six shows or is this a guessing game or something?
