This is definitely not going to be a crying movie :eyes:

We should watch this as a double feature with A Marriage Story. A great way to start 2020.

I was talking with my wife about her when we watched the show (we played the “how old do you think she is?” game). Kidman is objectively beautiful and clearly a great actress, but her versions of both of those have never done it for me. I’ve just never been into her.

Considering my wife is a short brunette, she enjoyed hearing that.

Nice. I appreciate you sharing your experience of the show.

For me, there are multiple notes and they’re all among my favorites.

  1. everyone outsmarting everyone
  2. unreliable narrators
  3. a murder mystery
  4. extreme codependence
  5. the hubris and catastrophe of infidelity

And most of all is seeing people of privilege crack under pressure. Even the people who start the story innocent end up guilty by the end.

Now maybe that doesn’t do it for you, but I could consume nothing but this sort of stuff day on end.

Cops are assholes, kidman has alot to be stressed about, and her son has a lot to be sad about is what i took from it.

+1 to what Risky said

Plus, in this kind of story…the cops could be in on it! Easiest way to convince people a suspect is guilty is to apply so much pressure that they break the law in an equally devastating manner.

Welp…

That’s a thing that I’ll probably watch and then file away with Dear Zachary never to be seen again.

Looks like Shia is attempting a comeback.

Also, fuck A Marriage Story for being such a good movie. Fuck that noise.

Honey Boy was very good imo. Peanut Butter Falcon not as good but enjoyable imo. Shia will be around forever.

The Room is my all-time Bad Movie Experience. Just so much heart and soul poured into it by a guy who knows nothing about making movies or the human condition.

That’s what makes it so good. It’s so incredibly earnest, and yet just terrible

I don’t know if this is the right place for it but I watched the tekashi 6ix9ine piece on hulu. It was decent. I knew nothing about him other than one year it seemed like he was all of a sudden all the fuck over all my social media and I didn’t know why.

He seems like a massive piece of shit, and it gets into details, but I guess I should have surmised that by the massive 69 tatooed on his forehead. I don’t like to judge by appearances, but man was I right on this one.

What an insane life this guy has led. What a fuckin heater for someone who basically made every single wrong decision at every point in his life and doesn’t have much talent. But, he’s almost certainly going to get killed by any one of the dozens of people he snitched on.

…is this the inspiration for UP’s very own 6ix? :astonished:

he better hope he stays out. being a pedophile and a snitch is like the SuperAIDS of prisoner status. probably better off if someone just gets him before then.

Much appreciated. I will start watching this tonight

The more fully formed Billions review.

I said it was like Suits, but sadly Suits was more interesting and had more heart.

This must have been Paul Giamatti cashing in because this show clearly loves the hedge fund side of the story way more. All the hedge fund guys, down to receptionists get personalities, story lines, quirks, etc. The show also revels in soaking in opulence with Axe driving fancy cars to drive fancy cars, taking helicopters just to take helicopters, etc.

Meanwhile the NYSD is just a collection of plot points. Beyond Giamatti speechifying to rally the troops the show doesn’t really care about the people who work there. They randomly get tips of financial malfeasance and pursue cases and the only parts of the case you see if the parts that are necessary to move the hedge fund side along. They do talk about their history and motivations but it’s a case of the writers being too bored to show you so they’ll just havetheir characters tell you their motivations and history.

The only exception is the second in command who is written a bit more fully and a short cute story line of him and another assistant dating which involved a night of them, being so straight laced, going wild by shooting illegal fire works.

Shout out to the secondary characters

Wags, the actor who plays him always has a lot of charisma.

Hall, who’s played with flat menace and at one point is asked was sexual quirks he has and says something like you don’t want to know and then a few scenes later a little person hooker is seen leaving his house.

The hedge fund lawyer who is the killer at the end of True Detective season 1 and is creepy looking, even in a suit.

I don’t think I’ll go one past season 2. It’s just not that interesting. Axe is a drama black hole because most of the problems involve him potentially losing ethereal amounts of money and the solutions to his problems usually involve throwing money at it. Chuck is more interesting but he’s literally failed at everything for 2 seasons.
