If they get to 60 it’s a fucking lock, if they get 53 seats and find a way to do it via reconciliation it’s a favorite. If they have to nuke the filibuster for it, they probably need 55+ seats. Don’t see Romney, Murkowski, or Collins voting for that - and probably a couple others strategically value the filibuster more.
Not that it matters because it’s Calvinball, but the easy fix to this is to make medicare/medicaid funds contingent on allowing abortion. Should have been done years ago honestly, but whatever fuck it all.
It certainly has an economic dimension, but it’s not something that is perceived as an economic issue. Perception of reality is more important than reality in electoral politics.
For the purpose of analyzing voter behavior, abortion is not an economic issue. Whether it actually is an economic issue is irrelevant to this point.
I feel we are having a disagreement because you’re thinking of this in layman’s terms and I’m thinking of this in a more technical sense as a former student of public opinion. If one were to analyze economic vs social issues, abortion would be closed as a social issue.
Put it up for vote when it fails put it up again. Over and over. Refuse all access to all committees for all republicans. Halt all other government work. Immediately advance legislation targeted at every single gop priority. Paper the fucking world with executive orders targeting every gop policy. Stand up with every single dem in congress and at the state level. Every single one on the steps of the house and declare in one voice SCOTUS has lost its credibility.
Of course, none of this will happen because the dems are fully on board.
Who is going to stop them from using reconciliation? SCOTUS? Bwaa-haa-haa
Don’t see this happening. Would make a federal ban impossible.
Was listening to Strict Scrutiny today, and they were trying to read the tea leaves about who would write this opinion. Based on who had already written opinions this term, and the idea that opinions tend to be spread pretty evenly across justices, they seemed to expect that Roberts would not be writing the Dobbs opinion. Which they interpreted as evidence that Roberts was probably on the losing side. If so, Thomas as senior justice chooses the writer. Which they had pegged as Barrett, for maximum trolling - IT CAN’T BE MISOGYNISTIC IF IT’S WRITTEN BY A WOMAN.
So it looks like the only thing they missed is that, instead, it’s written by absolute WOAT Alito, which I take as a personal slap in the face from God.
Edit: Oh Christ, I just did a quick google to see what year he graduated, only to find out that my former high school’s library has been dedicated to him.
The White House Fossile could just appoint more justices butnahhhhhhhhhhhh
Biden doesn’t give two fucks about roe
With this SCOTUS, nothing is impossible. It’ll be a stretch, but they’d find a way.
I’m not reading the draft, but it’s hard to imagine what stops whatever logic is applied here from overturning:
- Obergefell v. Hodges
- Lawrence v. Texas
- Griswold v. Connecticut
- Loving v. Virginia
and that’s just off the top of my non-lawyer head.
Kind of sad that the Dem response to this will be weaker than the Republican response to made-up shit on January 6.
Speaking of contraception rights (adjacent)
Science college mergers with Catholic University. One of first actions is to cancel all birth control. Not just not employees insurance but campus pharmacy can’t fill scripts.
The doctrine of fuck you that’s why is undefeated
You guys have no idea what insane shit is mainstream in the Federalist Society, and they’ve been waiting 2 generations for this. It’s going to get much much worse from here and there is functionally zero opposition.
Feels so hopeless as to not even be worth fighting at this point
I’m quite sure this is the plan
I think a ton of people here know exactly what it is
This has been a long time coming, so the fight is probably going to be an equally long slog.
What I would say is that this is an absolutely legitimate outcome under the Constitution and people need to think long and hard about whether they want to support the current constitutional regime.
Can we ban this troll. Discord sometimes makes me see their posts even if I ignore them, infuriating
