The Sumo Thread

We have a pretty entertaining basho shaping up, especially with the Yokozuna going kyujo from today.

Takayasu leads the pack, but Mitakeumi, Abi, Wakatakakage, and a host of others all in the mix.

Damn, Wakatakagake beats Ichinojo, the biggest man in sumo in a straight-up push-out. Is he goated with the sauce?

Basho is shaping up for an exciting finish, with a high likelihood of a first-time yusho.

Would love to see Takayasu bring it home, but Wakatakakage or Kotonowaka would also be worthy winners.

Pulling so hard for takayasu

Takayasu crumbled to the pressure of being in the lead, leaving him and Wakatakakage tied at two losses and Kotonowaka lurking behind with three and still a chance should the other two lose tomorrow.

Since they’ve all already faced one another, they’ll fight independently and see where how the dominos fall.

Still rooting for Takayasu to get it done, but losing today while the other two won can’t be helping his already shaky confidence.

Takayasu snatched defeat from the jaws of victory three times in a row, and he whose name you can’t say fast five times in a row earned his first yusho.

Confirmed goated with the sauce. Wakataka is bound for big things.

I’m glad to see Shodai keep his rank for some reason. Would suck if he got sucks sidelined because of lingering COVID.

Very excited to see a new sumo league coming to Iowa!

Never thought I’d need to ask this question, but how do you guys watch sumo outside of Japan?

NHK’s Grand Sumo website is one place but also there are underground discord and youtube channels that host sumo coverage.

Also if you want to see juryo matches, Natto Sumo’s discord and YouTube channels are the only place I know to get them. And his YouTube gets taken down very often.

I just watch the highlights on NHK World TV app

Oh yeah, NHK doesn’t show all of the matches on their website, which is why I often watch through the Natto discord.

Sumo is my religion and not being in Japan while a basho is ongoing is heresy.

Maybe it’s just me, but I would think that attending a basho would just be painfully boring compared to watching a highlights show or a DVR recording. Just too much dead time without any action. Don’t get me wrong – it’s on my list of stuff to do if I can plan a Japan trip around it, but I can’t imagine doing it more than once.

You’d think so, but sometimes NHK airs full-length segments with all of the pre-match ceremonies and I enjoy chilling out and watching the pageantry. Everyone I know who’s seen sumo in Japan has said it’s a blast to take it all in. That said, I don’t think I’d have time to follow the sport without highlight shows.

For the past 10 years, I have, almost without fail, watched every moment of sumo from 4PM to 6PM each day of each tournament broadcast.

And I’ve attended several basho live and can’t wait to go again. If you go live and find it boring, you’re probably not a true fan (not that there’s anything wrong with that).

Maybe. I’d consider myself a true NFL fan. I also would consider going to a regular season game to be torture. I’ve got to be able to watch multiple games at once.

If my Dolphins make a Superbowl in my lifetime, I’d probably go to that. That’s about it. Unfortunately, that doesn’t look like a decision I’m ever going to have to worry about making.

i’m a Browns fan if it makes you feel any better.

But if you do have a chance to go to a live basho, splurge for the best seats possible on the first level. It’ll make all the difference.
