The Sumo Thread

He made it to Juryo last basho, quickly got injured and went kyujo, and thus fell back down to Makushita for this basho.

Bushozan experiencing the worst moment of his young life.

Not much activity here, but we have a pretty exciting basho going on. Yusho is still up for grabs and Mitakeumi is on the cusp of becoming an Ozeki barring an epic final two days collapse.

Mitakeumi has been a solid but mostly non-distinctive dude since Iā€™ve been following sumo. Kinda hoping he gets the yusho.

He has two yushos to his shikona, but has been unable to get over the Ozeki hump. If he bags his third this time his Ozeki promotion will be automatic, but even if not he probably just needs to win one of his last two matches.

Terunofuji vs. my man Abi today should be fun stuff.

Wow I donā€™t ever remember seeing him win once. Either it was before I started watching or my mind just totally filters him out.

2018 and 2019, but heā€™s lacked the consistency to get the 33 win total or so over 3 basho to achieve Ozeki promotion despite his yushos.

IIRC, mitakeumiā€™s first was in a basho that was absolutely littered with sanyaku injuries. it was still a good performance, but everyone at the top was out.

Mitakeumi finally shuts up his doubters with a third yusho and Ozeki promotion.

# Sumo Is Getting Big in Texas

Sumo comes back to Osaka for the first time since the start of the pandemic.

Iā€™m going bold and calling a Hoshoryu yusho. Teru gets injured and Mitakeuma will be too busy adjusting to the married life.

Any of you sumo-following bros know what the doping situation is in Sumo? How bad is it?

You turned the newest Ozeki from an ocean into a horse.

Hoshoryu will be a Yokozuna one day. But he still needs a good 20 kilos on his frame before he really begins to dominate.

Iā€™ll take Abi.

Based only on what I have read on Reddit, it seems the JSA doesnā€™t look very thoroughly into doping at all. Supposedly there are random tests. It wouldnā€™t surprise me too much if there is a bit of doping going on in the sport.

When you put it that way, Iā€™d be surprised if there wasnā€™t a lot of doping.

Then again, you can get insta-banned from sumo for so much as getting caught with marijuana, so that may scare people away from PEDs.

Tochinoshin used to mysteriously show up with little band aids all over his body, just around the time he was most jacked and rose to Ozeki. So thereā€™s that.

Abi loses on Day 1. So much for my prediction.
