Hard to say. My wife works for American Airlines in a union job and they have tons of pto/sick time but it’s so whacky.
They get “points” towards being fired for using sick days - even if it’s paid time off. They also can be required to work up to 4 hours of mandatory OT day of and even future day OT for 8 - 10 hours on days off - and are penalized if they can’t work with very few exceptions.
I’m guessing if the strike isn’t approved, then the workers can just get fired en masse if they try to do it anyway, like the air traffic controllers back in the 80s? Note: I may or may not be talking out of my ass here.
There’s effectively no penalty for a successful strike. Strikers lose protection from being fired for union activity. If anyone is arrested, it would probably be union leaders.
The unions should privately threaten to tell the public that they held off on labor action until after the midterms to help Biden and the Democrats, even if that is untrue, maybe especially if that is untrue. They’re in a position to hold the economy hostage and make inflation even worse than it’s been recently. If they are willing to play hardball, they can hurt millions of people economically and almost guarantee that Republicans win the White House in 2024. Do they have the willingness to push that hard and accept collateral damage?
trying to figure out why so many progressives voted for the negotiated deal that several of the rail unions rejected. maybe they thought this subsequent vote would give them cover: (??)
Biden is, no shock, a craven coward and Id love to see him eat shit for this. Not sure how your proposed strategy would particularly help railroad workers though. The collateral damage in this case seems like its probably massive reduction in the ability of railroad workers to collectively bargain in the future.
I do wish a progressive would threaten to use this to launch a primary challenge rather than fecklessly line up behind Biden '24.
There’s a good chance that the options are to force a deal now while controlling the Speakership or allow a strike (or a lockout to happen) that wrecks the economy so badly that there is public pressure to force a deal where the terms will be dictated by House Republicans and the resulting inflation guarantees a Republican trifecta in 2024. That’s the sort of assessment that progressive Dems have act based upon if they want to be realistic. I can understand why some of them would balk now.
I’m willing to tank the economy over this, but I’m also willing to tank the economy and refuse to raise the debt ceiling to make a point, even if it causes collateral damage.
Make a threat that has a realistic chance of harming Democratic power. If all Dems care about is maintaining their own power, then this has a chance of swaying them to modify their behavior.
Our sick and VTO are interchangeable, and our HR actively tells us to use all sick first because that isn’t paid out whereas vacation time is if you are terminated.
Well, but, I assume Senator Sanders will be running again in 2024, actually, as an independent if necessary, in light of the extreme gravity of the situation wrt overdose death, covid, and sexual assault, and the sheer amount of murder, rape, and other psychotic shit that has occurred during the Trump era.
Btw, I am still being repeatedly threatened with murder, beaten, my property stolen, and my access to my finances cut off.
