I almost did type that they accomplished nothing but walked it back slightly for the reasons you mention. Honestly the Floyd timeline kind of mimics your typical abusive relationship. Floyd got killed. People said I’m not taking this shit anymore. People protested hardcore. Lots and lots of politicians, corporations, even police promised to not do it again and that this would be the time they changed. People either got tired or bored with the protesting after a while. Nothing changed and we still have Democrats including Biden wanting more funding and the like for cops.
I’m not exactly sure how you defeat that cycle in this situation because literally no one who actually holds a lever of power wants anything to actually change as Riverman has alluded to many times. That would require Boomers actually having a shred of empathy, decency or selflessness and that just isn’t fucking happening. Boomers are going to live forever, destroy the earth and hold the levers of power for the next 20 years probably. At that point this country and likely the earth will be in ruins and they will have lived out their years in blissful ignorance to the actual consequences of any of it.
By following politics I probably learn more about how people work and what motivates them than I do anywhere else. I wouldn’t say that I find it entertaining, but it is valuable insight. In the Trump era I am much more keenly aware of the insidious nature of narcissism, and have really distanced myself from some people that I probably wouldn’t have in the past because they are toxic in a way I may have not noticed without Donnie Dumb Dumb giving a daily masterclass in toxic narcissism for 4 years.
I wish this was going to happen. What’s actually going to happen is that the climate change impacts are going to get exponentially worse every year for the rest of our lives… and at some point in the next couple of years it’s going to get so bad that the entire system collapses on itself. What follows will suck a whole bunch and make us all look back on the years we’ve already lived as the good old days.
I want to stress that this is not me being optimistic in any way. It’s not even a silver lining. These ghouls successfully ran out the clock and won the game as they saw it. They fucked around and are going to stick all of us with the finding out.
I mean a condo collapsed this year, I gotta assume that happens again soon. We seem to be seeing a major US metro flood at least once a year. I lived through a fucking ice storm in Texas this year that killed at least a hundred people and did who the fuck knows how much damage. The west coast is on fire six months out of every year.
We’ve been very blase about the impacts of climate change at the level we’re at. People have been saying ‘it’ll get bad in 20 years’ since I was a kid. It’s 20 years later now and shit is getting real on a regular basis for people.
Germany and China both had major flooding this year. I think it’s going to be 2-3x as bad as it is right now in 2-3 years because the process is accelerating not slowing.
Looked at through a reality based lense COVID was a result of climate change most likely. I’m expecting more long tail shit to happen with greater frequency and I know for a fact the supply chains aren’t built for chaos. The system is much more fragile than people think and we’ve been investing a sum that approaches zero dollars into preparation for climate change as a global civilization.
Unfortunately I think unless like FL starts to go underwater you’re still just gonna get shrugging and gaslighting from half the country. Shit, even if island nations get flooded into non-existence they’ll just say it’s a lie and they didn’t see it happen so it didn’t happen.
Oh I mean it is, for sure. But that’s not a thing that’s gonna happen on the 5-year scale or whatever. Meanwhile you’ll have a huge number of people saying the floods and fires and giant hurricanes are just God punishing us for checks notes letting men in girl’s bathrooms or something. You have no idea how long people can stretch out that denial.
Yeah it’s not like they’re going to wake up tomorrow and the ocean will have reclaimed the entire peninsula. But it has already started flooding in broad daylight and the number of big storms will increase and the time between them will shorten a lot. And to be clear I think this is already happening it’s not something that we need to change into.
We are having horrifying catastrophe’s on a weekly basis already. I think the number of people who haven’t directly experienced a truly weird climate change driven problem is going to shrink. The west is probably already 2 years into a drought that may literally never end in our lifetimes. Where do you think they’re going to be in 3 years when they still haven’t had a decent year of rain?
