Heh, I’m pretty sure Pelosi knew this would happen, anyway. I know we hate her, but she is particularly shrewd at this sort of gamesmanship.
McCarthy seems uniquely stupid. Way better to leave your three stooges on there to bloviate endlessly and grandstand to divert attention. He looks petty and stupid here with no benefit.
Maybe the GOP can indeed ride gerrymandering and voter suppression to a majority. But they’re really not doing themselves any favors right now. There isn’t even a pretense of trying to achieve anything.
An extended government shutdown and or default due to debt ceiling is almost certainly a positive for the gqp.
If anything will get Manchin to move on the filibuster, it’s McConnell playing brinkmanship with the debt ceiling.
When does the debt ceiling come into play? Soon?
ETA- End of July I guess.
They’ve played this game before and lost. Why’s it different now?
They can use the threat to run clock but if there’s a shutdown, they’re on dangerous ground. Mitch knows where the line is.
They can still bloviate in press conferences they hold on the days of the hearing. The media will both-sides it and having the committee at all will be just as bad as the insurrection.
This time they’re not in charge so it’s slightly more believable when they try to blame it all on the Dems.
You know what tilts me more than anything about this stupid ass fucking “bipartisan” charade? Ron fucking Klein liking every post on Twitter about how they are “very close” on the bipartisan deal. This motherfucker is the chief of staff and he’s basically the yokel Robert DeNiro fires in “Casino.”
If they’re all faking it to feign outrage at the end, which is the most charitable interpretation, even that’s really really stupid. They should be saying “fine, if you idiots want to pursue this that’s ok but Lucy is going to pull away the football.” That sets you up to actually convince the idiots on filibuster reform. “We tried and got close” does not.
9/11 commission not legit, no Al Qaeda on the committee!
Keep in mind the original proposal required GOP approval to issue subpoenas! McCarthy is a dunce.
I mean democracy is fucked without voting rights anyways so doesn’t really matter, only thing that matters is does it get manchin and cinema to do filibuster reform for voting rights
I probably should know the answer more than I do, but what exactly happens if the debt ceiling isn’t raised?
The Treasury has to shuffle money around for a couple months, after which the government can no longer deficit spend. Income in = expenses out, except the expenses out due to suddenly higher interest rates on the debt means other stuff gets cut to the bone.
I also assume the dollar and economy tank hard as fuck
Right. A default decreases the value of the bonds, which vaporizes trillions in wealth that was invested by people who don’t tolerate risk.
If these GOP assholes actually follow through they’ll just change the rules for this exact thing. Like they should do for everything.
mcconnell and the republican caucus don’t have the balls to shut down the government for weeks+
even if they want to tit-for-tat dems because dems got trump for like over a week of shutdown. just force a gov shutdown for a couple weeks and campaign the fuck out of it calling it the biden shutdown or whatever the opposite of what we were calling it four years ago
3ish years ago we got the biggest natl government shutdown in history of over a month and the party in power took a drubbing in the polls and eventually capitulated. Why would anything change now?
Obama term redux
